doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0288r0 Submission March 2005 Sean Coffey, Realtek.Slide 4 The role of volunteer editors IEEE 802.11 works within a wider industry context –The standards are intertwined with product development taking place at many different companies –Wi-Fi Alliance develops testing for interoperability and backward compatibility, and develops its own mandatory/optional requirements and certification A key role of volunteer editors is to bring this wider context to the standards drafting process

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0288r0 Submission March 2005 Sean Coffey, Realtek.Slide 5 Organization The editorial task is becoming too large for any one person –For the more complex amendments, such as TGe, it is already difficult for one person –TGn is more complex still Better and more productive to have an editorial team –Speeds the task, helps assure more thorough review, leverages different specializations –If elected, I intend to organize such an editorial team

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0288r0 Submission March 2005 Sean Coffey, Realtek.Slide 6 Requirements on Editor (or Editorial team) Clear and unambiguous technical specification, and Clear “chain of evidence”: –Description of how the technical aspects follow from votes of the Task Group membership My approach is that Editors have narrow and specific powers, rather than broad editorial discretion Will work to provide the Task Group maximum visibility and input into the process
