Senior Capstone Class Fall 2013 1

 What is a survey? Tool designed to elicit information from an individual or group of individuals Measures attitudes, tastes, viewpoints, opinions and perspectives from a specific population 2

Most common form of surveys: Interviews Questionnaires 3

 Personal discussion between one interviewer and one or more respondents Types of Interviewing:  Face to face  Phone Interview  Email Interview  Text/Chat/Messaging Interview 4

 Face to Face Interviews Sit down and converse with people Can adapt your questions to their answers Can read their body language and facial expressions IT IS NECESSARY FOR YOU TO RECORD RESPONSES DO NOT RELY ON YOUR MEMORY AT A LATER DATE Bring a laptop or recording device! Paper and pen works also! Inform respondent if will be recording them & ask for their consent 5

 Phone Interviews  Use when subject is: geographically far away too busy to meet with you does not want to communicate electronically 6

E Mail Interviews Less personal than face to face or phone interviews Cannot ask responsive questions on the spot Cannot detect tone or feeling in a response Interview is already in digital format Responses are recorded which increases accuracy 7

 TEXT/CHAT/MESSAGING INTERVIEWS Can talk with people who are distant Can adapt your questioning based on responses you receive Have a record of what was said Lots of typing involved, immediate response expected 8

 Considerations for surveys What group will you target? How many respondents will you include? How will you conduct your survey? (paper, electronically) How long will your survey be? What types of questions will you ask? 9

Surveys that collect data from respondents that have been part of a sample May be administered:  through the mail (costly)  in person (time consuming for a large group)  electronically (easy to set up and gather results) 10

 When creating questionnaires, avoid: Biased questions: Don’t you agree that texting in class is a problem? Instead use Is texting in class a problem? 11

 Avoid questions that make assumptions. Assumptions There are many people who believe that texting in class is a problem. Are you one of them? Instead use: Do you agree or disagree that texting in class is a problem? 12

 Avoid double-questioning Double questioning Do you agree that students are texting too much in class and should have their electronics confiscated if this occurs? Instead use: Are students texting too much in class? If you agree, should electronics be confiscated from students? 13

When composing a questionnaire:  Keep questionnaires as short as possible  Provide clear responses that are easy for a respondent to use  When possible, provide an option for respondent to supply an alternate answer 14

 Once respondents complete the questionnaires, use the data as a solid source of information in your paper. Don’t say: Everybody thinks that texting while driving is dangerous. Instead Use: In a survey of 100 high school students, 85% indicated that they believed texting while driving is dangerous. (Then cite the survey). 15

Questionnaires are easy to create online using a tool called www. SurveyMonkey.www. SurveyMonkey Today you will be participants in an online questionnaire. This was created using www.surveymonkey You will be asked your opinion about 3 different types of hand sanitizer. First we sample three different types of hand sanitizers. Then you will participate in an online questionnaire on your personal satisfaction with each sanitizer. After all results are compiled we will analyze the findings. Results will be collected and displayed in statistical and graphic form. 16
