2 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) With the increase of disposable healthcare items, most of which are made of high quality plastic, there is a need to utilize this plastic medical waste by developing a technology that could turn this bio-hazardous waste into the general waste stream from which plastic could be safely recovered and reprocessed. Especially keen on this solution are heath care service providers which continuously generate and dispose such waste in small batches which is an additional cost to them. The proposed idea is to use a microwave technology to pre-treat medical plastic waste on-site making it suitable for disposal in a plastic collection system. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  1 The project will analyze the conditions for surface changes under different microwaves  2 Different treatment conditions will be selected and optimized for small batch operation PROJECT IMPACT  The project will contribute to the Hazardous Waste Directive, Incineration Directive by offering non-incineration methods for medical plastic waste treatment and resource recovery  2 Health care service providers will generate additional value by utilizing medical plastic

3 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) Laminated plastic waste contributes to more than 50% of packaging waste which is not recovered in Europe. Potential recovery of 40000 t/y of Al from drinks packaging alone provides a lucrative proposition for recyclers who are in need of cost-effective technology. Existing approach (Enval) is to use microwave induced pyrolysis for recovering Al. In order to increase the efficiency of this process there is a need to modify the structure of laminated plastic, so that it would be more receptive to microwave radiation. This could be achieved by creating a catalyst to release a hot carbon maintaining a chemically reduced environment with beneficial effect on the chemistry of the pyrolysis products – alkanes and alkenes. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  1 The project will analyze the conditions for surface changes under different microwaves  2 Different catalysts will be selected and optimized to improve the Enval pyrolysis process PROJECT IMPACT  1 The project will contribute to the Hazardous Waste Directive, Incineration Directive by offering non-incineration methods for plastic recovery  2 Plastic recyclers will generate additional value by recovering Al

4 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) Polyurethane foam is the most common material used in seats for transport vehicles. It’s high flammability (which is exacerbated in high-speed trains in tunnels) and the increasing safety concerns of regulators led the industry to use flame-retardants, which though increased density of the material, diminished its functionality (softness), added cost to compounders, increased environmental risks. Thus the need for foam manufacturers is to find a cheap and environmentally friendly solution to make their products suitable for transport sector (especially railstock). The project will aim to develop a flame-retardant textile fabric meeting flammability standards in rail transport. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  1 The project will analyze the heat release of various flame-retardant fabrics and their barrier function for polyurethane foam  2 Different fabrics will be selected and optimized for polyurethane foam systems used in rail transport PROJECT IMPACT 1 The project will contribute to the EU legislation for new transport safety technologies by offering a product meeting increased flammability standards in transport (especially, rail)  2 PU compounders will generate additional value by offering a system solution to transport

5 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) There is a growing need for affordable insulation in renovation sector due to the increase in energy prices and heating costs. Polystyrene foam remains the cheapest solution, yet it suffers from a number of shortcomings, including limited thermal insulation, insufficient wet resistance, poor adhesion. The proposed project will improve the properties of batch polystyrene foam by adding nanocrystalline films or nanoparticles to better control gas permeability for water vapour, oxygen and CO2. The solution will have to be cost-effective and compatible with the polystyrene batch expansion process requirements. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  1 The project will analyze the conditions for surface changes during the batch expansion by using different nanocrystalline films or nanoparticles  2 Different application methods for deposition of nanocrystalline films will be analyzed, selected PROJECT IMPACT  1 The project will contribute to the Energy Efficiency Directive by offering renovation sector the product with improved properties  2 Polystyrene compounders will generate additional value by offering a better quality product
