Abroad on a Budget Financial Literacy Initiative & Personal Finance Club

The Financial Literacy Initiative  Our Mission The Financial Literacy Initiative is a program that seeks to educate young adults on the foundational concepts of personal finance. We strive to instill a sense of financial competency in Pepperdine students through instruction and coaching on the practical applications of money management.  Our Story In the Spring of 2015, The Financial Literacy Initiative was awarded a Waves of Innovation grant. The program’s three-year implementation plan, beginning in the fall of 2015, includes three steps:  1. Establish a “Money Management for Millennials” freshman seminar course  2. Offer “Personal Finance” to students as an elective course  3. Create a Center for Financial Literacy that is designed to educate, coach, and offer money management tools to students  Find out more at http://community.pepperdine.edu/seaver/financialliteracy/http://community.pepperdine.edu/seaver/financialliteracy/

Be Prepared Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.  Have cash budgeted and set aside in an emergency fund for incidents such as missing a train or flight.  Have a credit card with a sufficient limit that can be used extreme cases.

Be Disciplined  Creating a budget is easy, the difficulty comes in actually following it!  Link up with an accountability partner to stay on track.

Spending Abroad  Work with your parents to find the best credit card for you.  Watch out for transaction fees and fraud.  Each program is unique so talk to your ambassadors for specifics.
