6 OVERALL CERTIFICATION INFORMATION Michigan Certificates expire on June 30th of any given year

7 PROVISIONAL TEACHING CERTIFICATE o Valid for up to 6 years o May be renewed twice (each renewal valid for 3 years) o Additional 3rd renewal or 2 year extension available under specific conditions through MDE

8 PROVISIONAL TEACHING CERTIFICATE First & Second - Three Year Renewal - one of the following: o 6 semester credit hours (in a planned program) at an approved Teacher Prep Institution (TPI) or o 180 clock hours of State Continuing Education Clock Hours – SCECH (in approved professional development activities appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement(s) of the certificate held or o A combination of credit hours and State Continuing Education Clock hours equal to 6 semester credit hours (30 SCECH hours = 1 semester credit hour) or o Masters (or higher degree) within a K-12 area.

9 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 o Include evidence of 3 years of successful teaching experience. o Completion of 3 semester credit hours in an approved course of study in the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities, including field experiences. AND

10 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 Continued A professional education certificate must also include one (1) of the following: o Six semester credit hours in a planned program at an approved TPI / or 6 semester credit hours of academic credit appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) at any approved college or university o 180 clock hours of state continuing education clock hours (SCECH) in approved professional development activities appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) of the certificate OR

11 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 Continued o 150 annual DPPD hours (not to exceed 30 per year) District Provided Professional Development (PPDD) completed through professional development programs that are appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) of the certificate OR

12 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 Continued o A combination of semester credit hours, state continuing education hours (30 clock hours of state continuing education hours are equivalent to 1 semester credit hour), or district provided professional development – (30 clock hours of annual district provided professional development is equivalent to 1 semester credit hour or 30 clock hours of state continuing education clock hours) that equals 6 semester hours.

13 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE 5-YEAR RENEWAL Must hold a Professional Education Certificate, does not require further work experience. Must complete one (1) of the following: o 6 semester credit hours in a planned program at a TPI or 6 semester hours appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) of the certificate at any approved college or university or o 180 clock hours of state continuing education in approved professional development activities appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) of the certificate or

14 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE 5-YEAR RENEWAL CONTINUED o 150 hours District provided Professional Development completed through professional development programs that are appropriate to the grade level and content endorsement (s) of the certificate or o A combination of semester credit hours, state continuing education hours (30 clock hours of state continuing education hours are equivalent to 1 semester credit hour), or district provided professional development – (30 clock hours of annual district provided professional development is equivalent to 1 semester credit hour or 30 clock hours of state continuing education) that equals 6 semester credit hours.

15 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE 5-YEAR RENEWAL CONTINUED NOTE: Additional semester credit hours beyond the required 6 semester credit hours earned during any certificate validity span shall not be applied toward any subsequent renewals. Semester credit hours shall have been completed at a regionally accredited college or university.

17 NCLB AND SCHOOL CODE AND TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS MICHIGAN LAW - A district may not assign a teacher who does not have the proper state authorization to teach a subject and be considered Highly Qualified. Such an assignment would be out-of-compliance with School Code (Section 380.1531) in addition to NCLB. FEDERAL LAW - The NCLB Act requires districts to only assign a Highly Qualified teacher to teach a core academic subject.

18 ADMINISTRATOR CERTIFICATION PA 205 JANUARY 4, 2010 Requires administrators who are responsible for administering instructional programs to hold certificates.

19 RENEWAL & VALIDITY REQUIREMENTS Those hired after January 4, 2010, must hold a valid administrator certificate. Non-certified school administrator may be employed by a school district: enroll in a program leading to certification as a school administrator not later than 6 months after date of employment 3 years to obtain certification

20 RENEWAL & VALIDITY REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED Those employed on or before January 4, 2010, do not need to hold the administrator certificate, but must meet the same professional development requirements as for administrator certificate renewal: Every 5 years: 6 semester credit hours OR 180 SCECHs OR a combination of the two
