5 IN THE RIGHT PLACE4/1/16 What would happen if you removed a cactus from the desert in Arizona and planted it in the forest of Georgia? Chances are, the cactus would not do very well. It is adapted to desert conditions. A cactus has a thick stem, spines, and deep roots. Think about these features. Then think about the desert conditions: hot, little rainfall, sandy soil through which water sinks quickly. Explain how the cactus is adapted to the desert by answering the following questions. 1.Why does a cactus have a thick stem? 2.How do deep roots help the cactus? 3.Spines are actually leaves. But they don’t carry on transpiration. Why? (remember transpiration is water vapor going from a plant to the atmosphere)
