1 Understanding Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection and Radiation

2 What is Heat? Heat is a transfer transfer of energy energy from one part part of a substance substance to another, another, or from one object to another, because of a difference difference in temperature.

3 Heat Transfer HeatHeat always moves from a warmer place place to a cooler place. –Hot –Hot objects in a cooler room will cool cool to room temperature. –Cold –Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.

4 Question If a cup of coffee and a red popsicle were left on the table in this room what would happen to them? Why? The cup of coffee will cool until it reaches room temperature. The popsicle will melt and then the liquid will warm to room temperature.

5 What is Heat? Heat is a form of energy associated with the motion of atoms or molecules.

6 Heat Transfer Methods HeatHeat transfers in three three ways: –Conduction –Convection –Radiation

7 Conduction Conduction is the transfer of heat between substances that are in direct contact with one another. The substances must be touching!!

8 Think about the word conductor…

9 Conductors use their hands … We touch with our hands… Therefore, conductors must touch in order to transfer heat!!!

11 Make a “C” with your left hand. Make a “D” with your right hand. Now cover the “D” with the “C”, and say “CONDUCTION”.

13 Why do some materials feel cooler (or warmer) when they are sitting in the same room?

14 Try this… Place your hand on the table, and then touch the leg of your chair. What do you notice?

15 Metal is a conductor. Metal conducts the heat away from your hands. Wood is an insulator. Wood does not conduct the heat away from your hands as well as the metal. Think about it this way: If you are at a football game and have to sit outside in 20° F weather, what type of bleachers would you want to sit on, wood or metal?

16 Some materials conduct heat or electricity and others do not. These are known as conductors and insulators.

17 Conductors Conductors are made of materials that electricity or heat can flow through easily. Thermal conductors are useful when it is necessary to heat things up or cool things down.

18 Some examples of conductors are: Copper Aluminum Platinum Gold Silver

19 Insulators Insulators prevent heat or electricity from passing through. A good thermal insulator will keep cold objects cold for a long time, and hot objects hot.

20 Some examples of insulators are: cotton/fabric wood plastic fiber glass rubber

21 Convection Convection is the transfer of heat energy in a liquid or gas. When part of a gas or liquid is heated, the particles it is made up of move faster and spread out more. The moving particles bump into other particles, causing them to move faster and spread out more creating a current. Basically, heated matter becomes more buoyant and "rises"; while cooler material "sinks".

24 Air is heated by the surface of our planet. Warm air rises and cooler air comes in to take it’s place.

26 Radiation Radiation is heat energy transferred in the form of rays or waves. The source of the heat and the body that is heated are not touching, and no matter needs to move between them.

27 The earth is heated by the sun through radiation.

28 You can feel the sun warm your skin on a sunny day. The rays from the sun heat your skin. This is because the energy causes the particles in your skin to move faster = more heat energy.

29 Heat waves from the fire travel in a straight line. One side of your body is heated (the side facing the fire), but the other side of your body is not heated (the side facing away from the fire).

42 Cold air sinks Where is the freezer compartment put in a fridge? Freezer compartment It is put at the top, because cool air sinks, so it cools the food on the way down. It is warmer at the bottom, so this warmer air rises and a convection current is set up.

47 Convection questions Why are boilers placed beneath hot water tanks in people’s homes? Hot water rises. So when the boiler heats the water, and the hot water rises, the water tank is filled with hot water. Why does hot air rise and cold air sink? Cool air is more dense than warm air, so the cool air ‘falls through’ the warm air.

48 Radiation questions Why are houses painted white in hot countries? White reflects heat radiation and keeps the house cooler. Why are shiny foil blankets wrapped around marathon runners at the end of a race? The shiny metal reflects the heat radiation from the runner back in, this stops the runner getting cold.

49 What is Heat? It is capable of being transmitted through solid and fluid media by conduction, through fluid media by convection, and through empty space by radiation.
