Evan Notman Bronwyn Llewellyn Brad Arsenault Jenny Frankel-Reed Albert Anoubon Momo Global Environment Officers State of the Art Workshop February 24, 2016 CONNECTING SPACE TO VILLAGE Science and technology serving the needs of developing countries SERVIR

www.servirglobal.net

SERVIR strengthens regional institutions around the world to get information into the hands of decision-makers to improve climate- resilient, low emissions development outcomes for: Food security; Water, Weather, and Disasters; Land Use/Land Cover What is SERVIR

www.servirglobal.net Results Framework Objective: Increased use of Earth observation information and geospatial technologies in development decision-making Goal: Improved economic, social, and environmental resilience to climate change IR2. Improved capacity of analysts and decision- makers to use earth observation information and geospatial information technologies IR4. Increased provision of user-tailored geospatial data, products, and tools to inform decision-making IR3. Improved awareness of and access to geospatial data, products, and tools IR1. Improved capacity of hubs to function as regional service providers

www.servirglobal.net Who is SERVIR Provide societal benefit from space 22 Earth observing satellites, all data free and open Extensive applied science research portfolio Reduce poverty, improve resilience Working on data-dependent issues in data-scarce places International field offices and partners in 70+ countries Regional hubs Research collaborators: Battelle, IRI, NASA Goddard, NASA JPL, NASA Marshall, Penn State, Resources for the Future, Tennessee Tech, USGS, U of Arizona, Woods Hole Research Center Users: Governments, NGOs, regional authorities, companies, etc. Support Team TBD

www.servirglobal.net USAID GCC = ~$30M over 5 years NASA ~$30M over 5 years for science collaboration USAID Missions Himalaya: $3.1M (Afghanistan) E&S Africa: $2.25M (E. Africa, Kenya, Uganda) W Africa: $5M (W Africa, Sahel TBD) Mekong: $TBD (Vietnam, Cambodia) S America: ~$5-8M TBD C Asia: ~$10-12M TBD Private Sector Digitalglobe, Esri, Google – In kind Total leverage = ~$55-60M Leverage

Strategic Plan 2015-2020 Endorsed by USAID and NASA leadership: 1.Reach More Users with Demand-Driven Products and Services 2.Connect More Innovative and Appropriate Science to SERVIR 3.Expand SERVIR Networks through New Strategic Partnerships 4.Improve Sustainability of SERVIR at Multiple Levels

Revised roles Building on lessons learned, USAID will leverage missions and program partners in the field NASA will leverage centers, research activities, and broader US Government science Global SERVIR Support functions will be streamlined Hubs will partner more extensively in their regions All will focus on sustainable services

What does SERVIR look like in 2020? SERVIR Eastern & Southern Africa SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya SERVIR Mekong SERVIR West Africa SERVIR South America SERVIR Central Asia SERVIR Global SERVIR Global

A shift toward services What are sustainable services? have a specific user or users, are tailored to respond holistically to users’ needs, are supported through uptake, maintenance, and feedback loops. Why services? So SERVIR is more than a collection of datasets, trainings, maps, and tools. So we work as multidisciplinary teams that bring supply and demand skills together to address critical development issues So we can identify the use of SERVIR services in decision-making.
