www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering What is this course? Product design is an exciting profession. There is something very rewarding about seeing a product that you have designed in a store or, even better, being used by someone. As a product designer you are concerned with the needs of the end user, but you are also responsible for many other issues. Design can make peoples lives better, it can make businesses more successful, but it can also have the opposite effects. This is why it is important that a designer’s education is complete and that it prepares them fully for their future Career in a responsible profession. This course equips you for a career in Product design, Industrial design or in the Product development sector. The course has been developed to address the specific needs of industry to allow its graduates the best possible chance of obtaining the job they want. A graduate’s ability to come up with creative solutions to design problems is of paramount importance to employers, but it is also essential that their proposed designs are manufacturable within the constraints of time, money and quality. That is why these courses place great emphasis on the manufacturing aspects of design. There are two Product Design and Manufacture courses offered by the University, leading to an honours BEng or MEng. Both programmes share an almost common first year with the other courses in the school. It is possible to change courses at the end of first year if you choose to. The selection of the BEng or MEng route is made at the end of the second year and is dependent on the first two years’ grades. What facilities are there for Product Design? We have excellent facilities at The University of Nottingham. The School of M3 provides 3 design studios for Product Design students, 2 of which are new for 2008 and one of which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These are the hub of all project work and become a bit of a home from home. Next to the design studios is an IT Lab, again open 24/7. This lab has modern computers running a variety of design software. The course currently uses Pro Engineer as its CAD software and 3D Studio Max for Visualisation and animation. Students also use Adobe Creative suite for presentation work and have access to a colour laser printer. Rapid prototyping is a key element to the course. We currently have 3 machines usable by student and plans for more. Our traditional workshops are large and well equipped providing facilities for the production of test rigs and prototypes. We additionally have a manufacturing workshop with state of the art computer controlled machining centres, along with laser and water jet cutters. www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 MEng Product Design and Manufacture UCAS code H700 (BEng) H715 (MEng) School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Product design projects followed through with CAD development Use of product design software for CAD and rendering. Design consultants from industry teach every week.

www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Qualifying Stage (Year 1) The first year gives a solid grounding in engineering principals and begins to develop a commercial awareness. Creative and design skills are developed in two specialist modules. The knowledge, skills and understanding gained enables students to have a broader perspective when undertaking design projects from the start of the second year Part I (Year 2) The second year is about developing design skills through project work and taught modules. Traditional presentation skills and computer aided design are applied in design project work, as is knowledge from other subject areas. At the end of the this year the degree route is determined. Part II (Year 3) The BEng students continue to take a range of subject modules and then in there final semester undertake a major design project. The MEng students undertake smaller design projects in this year but take a larger Investigatory Module Part III (Year 4) The students take more in-depth modules this year and undertake their Major Project in the spring semester. The project is more industry focused than the BEng project and is constrained more by the needs of the manufacturer. www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Options include: Business Accounting, Engineering Materials Manufacture, Drive Technology and Control, Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques for Engineers, Investigatory Methods for Innovation in Engineering and Management, Rapid Product Development, Advanced Metal Forming, Flexible Automated Manufacture, Integrated Aerospace Design, Polymer Engineering, Conservation and Recycling of Materials, Cognitive Ergonomics, Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, Lean Manufacturing, Fibre Reinforced Composites Engineering, Human-Computer Systems, Joining Technology, Computer Integrated and Flexible Manufacture, Ergonomics in the Working Environment, Advanced Technology Review, Introduction to Managing Operations, Project Management Year 1 Engineering Design Engineering Science Mathematics Business operations Professional Studies (inc IT) Year 2 Product Design Projects Design Techniques Manufacturing Ergonomics Marketing Optional modules Year 3 BEng Development Processes Manufacturing Ergonomics Optional Modules Year 3 MEng Design projects Investigatory Methods Development Processes Manufacturing Ergonomics Optional modules Year 4 MEng Design Projects Development Processes Ergonomics Optional Modules
