Romeo and Juliet is a story about two teenagers who fall in love but are forbidden to see each other by their parents. They meet one night at a party (Romeo is actually there to check out another girl, Rosaline) and quickly fall in love. Unfortunately, Juliet’s parents already have a husband picked out for her. So, the two decide to get married and enlist the help of Juliet’s nurse to act as a messenger between the two and Friar Laurence who agrees to marry them. However, plans go awry after Romeo is banished from Verona and doesn’t get filled in on the plans that Juliet has for them to live happily ever after…

Love Hate Fate Loyalty

Love is a word that means different things in this play:  Romeo is first in love with Rosaline and she breaks his heart by becoming a nun.  Love between Romeo and Juliet (meeting and falling in love, and the consequences)  The nurse’s maternal love for Juliet  Mercutio’s brotherly love towards Romeo  Love is also a cause of violence between the Capulets and the Montagues

The Capulets and Montagues have an ongoing feud (the audience does not know why)  Tybalt’s hate for Romeo and all Montagues “As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.” (Act I scene I line 61)  Romeo and Juliet’s love is constantly threatened by a society full of hate “Tis but by thy name that is my enemy.” (Act II scene ii lines 38 – 39)

Fate is defined as something that unavoidably befalls a person or fortune. Examples of fate in Romeo and Juliet  The family feud  Romeo and Juliet as star crossed lovers  Friar Laurence’s letter not being received by Romeo

Examples of Loyalty:  Mercutio to Romeo (risks his life)  Loyalty amongst the Capulets and Montagues  There is loyalty between Romeo, Juliet and Father Laurence as well as trust

Puns Allusions Metaphors Personification Foreshadowing Paradox Oxymoron

A pun is a humorous play on words Mercutio – “Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance.” Romeo – “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes / With nimble soles; I have a soul of lead…” (Act I Sc. 4)

An allusion is a reference to a well known work of art, music, literature, or history. “At lovers’ perjuries, they say Jove laughs.” (Act II scene ii) Jove is another name for Jupiter, the Roman King of the Gods.

A metaphor is a direct comparison between two unlike things. Romeo – “But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? / It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” (Act II scene ii)

Personification occurs when an inanimate object or concept is given the qualities of a person or animal. Juliet— “For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night / Whiter than new snow on a raven’s back. / Come, gentle night, come, loving, black-brow’d night” (Act III scene ii)

Foreshadowing is a reference to something that will happen later in the story. Juliet – “Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” (Act III scene ii)

An oxymoron describes when two juxtaposed words have opposing or very diverse meanings. Juliet – “Beautiful tyrant! fiend angelical!” (Act III scene ii)

A paradox is statement or situation with seemingly contradictory or incompatible components. Juliet – “O serpent heart, hid with a flowering face!” (Act III scene ii)
