1 Workshop on CLIMATE CHANGE and WATER in the AGRICULTURE sector Cristina DANÉS Water Deputy Director General Directorate for Water SCG May 2011

2 Why? Because:  Water will be intensely affected by climate change  In some regions 70% of the total global “blue water “ is consumed by the agriculture  The CAP reform offers a good opportunity to encourage a water management, related to agriculture, more resilient to climate change  Both floods and drought represent serious problems for the agriculture and the water bodies related For facing the challenges of climate change, water managers regarding the agriculture sector need to know what are the most appropriate adaptation options ¡! Co-organised between EC, UK and ES

3 What are the goals?  Exchange practical information about predicted impacts of climate change in water management, focused in the agriculture sector  Provide examples on adaptation, considering the different regional scenarios across Europe.  Provide inputs to the follow up on the Guidance Document on Climate Change and Water  how to ensure that the next RBMPs will be climate resilient  Feed the Commission initiative on the Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Waters  ensure join up of policy at EU level

Structure of the workshop  two sections:  Impacts of climate change on water bodies: Water availability and water demand for agricultural purposes Status of water bodies (both chemical and ecological)  Adaptation examples : Extreme events (drought and floods) Future conditions ¡! Particular attention for the cross-cutting measures

5 Next steps MarchAprilMayJuneJulyAugustSepte.Octob.Nove.Decem. Approval of the overall idea of the workshop by the Expert Group Identification of topics (presentation to the EG on Agri&Water) Planned approval of the outline by the SCG and Water Directors Elaboration of the draft agenda. Designation of rapporteurs and chairmen. Tentative date of the workshop Elaboration of the conclusions Presentation of the conclusions to the SCG and Water Directors meeting

6 Practical issues  One day and half or two days workshop  September 2011  In Madrid  The selected topics will be presented in plenary sessions and discusses in small groups  100 participants maximum (both administrations and stakeholders) ¡! Volunteers for presentations or chairmen and rapporteurs are very welcome
