Dress Code Wear safety glasses when handling hazardous chemicals or equipment. Avoid wearing contacts when chemicals are in use. Wear appropriate clothing for the lab. An apron or lab coat may be necessary. Wear closed toed shoes. Tie back hair and clothing to avoid contact with chemicals and fire during lab.

General Safety Rules No horse play in lab. Be prepared for the lab. Read or complete the pre-lab before experimentation. Carefully follow the experimental procedure. Do not deviate. Use equipment only for its intended purpose in the lab. Be careful not to spill or break anything. Report spills or breakages immediately to the teacher. Never eat or drink in the lab. Know the location and proper use of all safety equipment. Keep the lab area uncluttered.

First Aid Report all accidents and injuries to the teacher immediately. Be aware of the location of the first aid kit and nurses office. Know the location of the phone and important emergency numbers.

Heating and Fire Safety Wear safety glasses when heating any liquid. Maintain a clean work area. Point test tubes and other containers away from you while heating. Never heat a liquid in a closed container. Check containers for heat before picking them up. Use heat gloves when picking up hot containers.

Safe Chemical Use Never mix chemicals for the fun of it. Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless you are sure it is harmless. Dispose of chemicals properly. Use proper procedure for handling acids and bases.

Glassware Use Dispose of broken glass in designated containers. Never heat glass unless it is Pyrex or another approved type of glass. Always clean glassware before and after use.

Using Sharp Instruments Always handle anything sharp with care. Never cut material toward you. Report cuts immediately.

Handling Living Organisms No investigations involving pain, discomfort, or harm to any animal will be performed. Treat all living things with care and respect. Ask permission before touching or handling any animal. Receive training on how to properly handle specific animals before handling. Always put away animals properly. Wash your hands after handling animals. Report any accidents involving animals immediately.

End of Investigation Rules Upon completion, clean up your lab area and equipment and put it away. Wash your hands after the experiment.
