Laboratory Safety Rules IB Chemistry – Beth McKee

In every lab class there is always the danger, that you may expose yourself and/or others to injury. The chemicals and equipment that you use and the way that you use them are very important, not only for your safety, but for the safety of those working around you.

Please observe the following selected rules at all times.. This power point is not a limited set of rules. Flinn Scientific’s Student Safety Contract will be the standard to follow in lab. Failure to do so increases your risk of accident and will result in your removal from lab. This will result in a loss of lab points

Lab Preparation Study your lab procedure before coming to class. Ask questions! Follow all pre-lab instructions and make notes. Set up apparatus as described in the lab handout or by your teacher. Never use makeshift arrangements.

Personal Protection

1. Goggles should be worn when chemicals, including water, are being heated or mixed. This will protect your eyes from chemicals that spatter or explode. If you happen to get some chemical in your eye, flush thoroughly with water for 15 minutes If irritation develops, contact a physician. Use the eyewash station! Personal Protection

Contact Lenses Please be advised that there is a slight increase in the risk of eye damage when contact lenses are worn. Fumes or small particulates could become trapped under the contact lens. To reduce the risk, as well as others, full safety goggles are necessary.

Personal Protection 2. No eating, drinking, or application of cosmetics is allowed in the lab. You run the risk of internalizing poison or applying an irritant to your face.

Personal Protection 3. Open-toed shoes are not proper attire for a chemistry lab and are not allowed. Dangling jewelry and trailing sleeves (and other forms of loose clothing) are considered potential safety hazards and should not be worn during lab exercises. You will be notified before lab days so plan accordingly.

Personal Protection 4. If you have long hair, make sure it is tied back. 5. Read labels carefully! 6. Never taste anything. If instructed to smell a chemical, do so by carefully wafting the top of the container so that a little vapor is directed towards your nose.

Personal Protection 7. Treat every chemical as if it were hazardous! If a chemical comes in contact with skin, flush the area with water for 15 minutes. If irritation develops, contact a physician. Always inform your teacher. If the chemical is an acid or a base, it may require neutralization.

Personal Protection 8. Never store your coat, backpack, or books on the lab counters where they can be contaminated by chemicals. Always keep the floor clean so in case of accident, you and your classmates may exit the room.

9. Horseplay Horseplay can lead to chemical spills, accidental fires, broken containers, and damaged equipment. Never throw anything to another person; be careful where you put your arms; and no wrestling, punching, or shoving in the lab. Save that for when you get older and start dating.

Emergency Response: 1. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, eye wash, and safety shower in your lab and know how to use them. 2. Notify your instructor immediately after any injury, fire or explosion or spill.

Emergency Response: 3. Clean up all messes immediately This is no time to be a pig. Your lab area should be spotless when you start experimenting and spotless when you leave. If not clean it. Kitty litter with baking soda will soak up acid spills

Emergency Response: 4. Fire If there is a fire in the room notify the person in charge immediately. If they are not in the room and the fire is manageable, smother the fire with a blanket or use an extinguisher in an emergency and send someone to find an adult. Remember: Stop, Drop, and Roll! Never leave an open flame unattended. It is hard to see if it is a proper flame, blue in color.

Chemical Waste Disposal: 1. Never return chemicals to reagent bottles. (Try for the correct amount and share any excess.) 2. Dispose of waste in proper containers!!! Read labels carefully and label all vials with contents, no matter how insignificant it may seem. No solids in the sink!

Chemical Waste Disposal: 3. Dispose of glassware in broken glassware boxes only!! Never in trash cans. 4. Always read labels and listen to disposal instructions in the pre-lab exercise.

Additional Safety Guidelines: 1. Heat only Pyrex or Kimex glassware. 2. Electrical equipment doesn’t mix with water and always unplug by pulling on the plug, not the cord. 3. When diluting always add acid to water, “like you oughter”.

Chemical Waste Disposal: 4. Always wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the lab!!! Even if you don’t think that you handled any chemicals. 5. Never mix chemicals that are not part of the lab.

Goggle Song I am a little chemist short and stout. Here are my goggles. Here are my eyes. When I don’t wear my goggles, My teacher Shouts JUST PUT THEM ON OR GET RIGHT OUT! (Sung to I’m a Little Tea Pot)
