The aims of this session are: To look at the ways the subject addresses issues of personal, social and political importance in relation to the idea of identity. To consider how Psychology and the social sciences are studied at degree level. You will quickly learn in that there are no right or wrong answers! Have a go at the following…

Who am I? How would you define your identity and what does it mean to you? Identity is our self, our personality and our individuality

Who am I? You will probably find that some of your answers relate to your social identity e.g. gender, work, social class etc (these usually come first) and some may relate to your personality including feelings, abilities and interests (these are usually second)

Who am I?

You may have more than one identity - can you think of any examples?

Who am I? Look at your social identities are some more important to you than others, do you keep some hidden, what might others think of them?

Who am I?

Think of six statements starting with “I am” e.g. I am a student You will probably find that some of your answers relate to your social identity e.g. age, gender, work, social class etc (these usually come first) and some may relate to your personality including feelings, abilities and interests (these are usually second.)

Who am I? These social identities help define the roles we play in society and also what is expected of us from others. They can change over time depending on the groups we are in and the roles we take

Who am I? Now we will look at cultural identity - What does Englishness mean to you? Do you feel that you are “European”?

Who am I? Cultural identity means the identity of the group you feel you belong to. You might say I am a member of a football club, or I am English, or I am a student. It is how you see yourself within a group.

Who am I? These are just some of the areas we look at in Social Psychology. The workshop will explore more areas of Psychology and Social Science which you could study at HE. www.bps.org.uk/careers/careers-videos/careers-videos_home.cfm
