3 ControlLogix 5580 Controller Differentiators
Secure Digital Card 2 GB optional nonvolatile memory storage for the user program and tag data Multi-core CPU Optimized for faster system performance New faster memory with larger caching Onboard Display and Status Indicators Provides enhanced diagnostics and troubleshooting USB Port Provides easy access for programming, troubleshooting, online edits and updating the controller firmware Access Door and Reset Button Helps protect and provides easy access to the Reset button and SD memory card Ability to return the controller to the out-of-the-box state Integrated Energy Storage Module Removes the need for a battery Dual vector floating point (VFP) co-processor Provide additional performance for complex motion and math-intensive applications MEMORY The 1756-L8 incorporates faster RAM than the 1756-L7 The 1756-L8 uses double data rate (DDR) to send data on the rising and falling clock edge The 1756-L8 uses both L1 (x4 for each core) and L2 cache; 1756-L7 uses L1 cache only 1 Gb Embedded Ethernet Port Enables high-performance I/O and motion control out of the front of the controller Integrated Motion on EtherNet/IP for motion applications up to 256 axes supporting 32 axes per ms Enhanced Security Features Digitally-signed and encrypted firmware Controller change detection Controller Audit logging Role-based access control

4 ControlLogix 5580 Portfolio Positioning
High capacity and embedded communication Supports standard and extreme environments Integrated safety control High-performance Controllers Standard Controllers Safety Controllers Applications for motion, discrete process, safety, and high-availability needs Communication Modules EtherNet/IP, ControlNet and DeviceNet networks ControlLogix® 5580 System On-Machine™ Controllers On-Machine™ standard and safety control Peer-to-peer, HART and Isolated I/O 1756 I/O Modules Copyright © 2009 Rockwell Automation®, Inc. 5 Controller Communications
Communications now separated from control User control and motion tasks are no longer interrupted by communications Previously 20% of the controller scan was used for CPU communications Provides reduced complexity for user programming and task balancing System Overhead Time Slice removed - Users no longer need to adjust Communications no longer impacts controller performance!

6 ControlLogix 5580 Runtime Memory Usage
Previously, design recommendations instructed users to reserve no less than 20% of available memory for future firmware updates and for runtime memory consumers. For example: MSG instructions, HMI Trends, Alarms, RSLinx®, Online Edits The 5580 controller runtime memory consumers now separated from application memory freeing up application memory In addition, the onboard memory is now increased 5570 Controller Memory Size (MB) 5571 2 5572 4 5573 8 5574 16 5575 32 5580 Controller Memory Size (MB) % Increased Memory Size 5581E 3 50% 5582E 5 25% 5583E 10 5584E 20 5585E 40 ControlLogix 5580 controllers have 25% or more memory!

7 Programming Language Execution and Task Switching Enhancements
Controller Language Scan Times Five LD routines with 1000 rungs each Five STX routines with 1000 lines each 1000 ADD / SUB / MUL / DIV / MOD instructions 15,000 different program scoped tags, ie: Worst case Controller Task Switching Times Controller Task execution scan time Task Switch Time 5560 168 ms 165 ms 5570 45 ms ms 5580 09 ms ms L75 – Ladder Diagram L85E – Ladder Diagram 11x Increase! L75 – Structured Text L85E – Structured Text 20x Increase! Structured Text Scan Time = Ladder Diagram Scan Time It is easy to just create one instruction and copy paste it 1000 times. Doing so in an L8 will not result in the worst case scan time scenario (due to caching). This test uses new tags for each instance of an instruction.

All high speed I/O and Motion out the front port – NOT across the backplane
