Oscillatory Motion Physics 7(A)

Learning Objectives Examine and describe oscillatory motion Examine and describe wave propagation in various types of media Oscillatory Motion

Oscillation – a repetitive change over time that occurs about an equilibrium point Period – the amount of time required to complete an oscillation – Measured in seconds, s Examples – Mass on a spring – Pendulum – Playground swing – Vibration of guitar strings – Electromagnetic waves Oscillatory Motion

Energy constantly converted between gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy At the top of its swing, the pendulum has maximum gravitational potential energy and minimum kinetic energy At the bottom of its swing, the pendulum has maximum kinetic energy and minimum gravitational potential energy Energy in Oscillatory Motion

Wave – an oscillation transferred through space with little or no disturbance of the medium it moves through Can be represented by a displacement versus time graph of a pendulum Description of Oscillatory Motion

Mechanical waves – require a medium to travel through – Ocean waves travel through water – Sound waves travel through the air Electromagnetic waves – do not require a medium to travel through – Visible light – Radio waves Transverse waves – particles move perpendicular to the motion of the wave – Electromagnetic waves Longitudinal waves – particles move parallel to the motion of the wave – Sound waves – Pressure waves Types of Waves
