HOMEOSTASIS Section 6.6

Introduction 1. Muscle contraction provides heat to warm skin. 2. Muscles move bones, eyes, permits speech, and creates facial expressions. 3. Muscles protect glands and organs. 4. Muscle contraction keeps blood moving throughout the body. It also creates blood pressure which forces blood throughout the blood vessels. 5. Muscles move lymph. Physical activity enhances immunity. 6. Assist the body in breathing

Muscular Disorders SPASMS INJURIES 1. Sudden involuntary muscle contractions 2. Occur in smooth and skeletal muscles 3. Cramps= strong, painful spasms 1. Strain= overstretching of a muscle near a joint 2. Sprain= twisting of a joint leading to swelling of the muscle, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, and nerves 3. Tendonitis= inflammation of a tendon due to repeated athletic activity

Muscle CrampMuscle Strain SprainTendonitis

Muscle Diseases TETANUS MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY 1. Caused by a bacterium 2. Causes muscles to lock into place (tetanic contraction) 3. Cured with antibiotics 4. Prevented with vaccination 1. Broad term applied to a group of disorders characterized by progressive degeneration and weakening of muscles 2. As muscle fibers die, they are replaced by fat and connective tissue 3. Duschenne muscular dystrophy= most common form (genetic)
