Impacts on the Electric Grid Market Size Market Size How Customers Charge Vehicles How Customers Charge Vehicles Reinforcement of the Distribution System Reinforcement of the Distribution System Public Interest Public Interest

Market Size One of the challenges of preparing for the arrival of plug- in electric vehicles is that no one yet knows how large the market will be, or how fast it will grow. During early market development, when the number of plug-in electric vehicles is still relatively small, we do not anticipate any significant system-wide impacts to the electricity grid or electricity supply. It will be important to evaluate and learn from our experience during these early years, to plan for potential future impacts.

How Customers Charge Vehicles As the number of plug- in electric vehicles grows over time, how customers charge their vehicles, at home and using public charging infrastructure, will become a significant factor in determining the impact to the electricity grid. Avoiding spikes in electricity demand as a result of charging patterns will be an important policy objective.

Reinforcement of the Distributions System We do anticipate the need to reinforce the distribution system in some neighborhoods that have large numbers of plug-in vehicle owners and faster, higher-voltage charging systems. We are committed to making the necessary upgrades as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Public Interest SCE has begun to reach out to customers to understand their interest in plug-in electric vehicles. The earlier customers notify SCE of their intent to purchase a plug-in electric vehicle, the more effectively we can assess and plan for potential upgrades.

Customer Support PEV purchasers may need new equipment installed in their home. PEV purchasers may need new equipment installed in their home. The process for equipping a garage or other location with electric fueling and metering can involve multiple contractors and vendors, as well as city inspections. Streamlining the process is necessary to improve the customer experience and ensure scalability.

Customer and Stakeholder Education Capturing information on likely PEV purchasers as input for system planning Capturing information on likely PEV purchasers as input for system planning Early media outreach to lay foundation for 2010 education Early media outreach to lay foundation for 2010 education Consumer education and survey research at LA Auto Show Consumer education and survey research at LA Auto Show PEV readiness information on SCE.com in four languages PEV readiness information on SCE.com in four languages Automated customer service line leads customers to Web site Automated customer service line leads customers to Web site Direct marketing collateral developed Direct marketing collateral developed Messages focused on the 3 “plug-in ready” steps

Summary I plan on sharing this externship with my students. They will be interested in seeing how mathematics is used in this field. From analyzing the impact on the electric grid to calculating market penetration and economic impact. Additionally I can share how technical aptitude is needed for other fields within the industry.
