P LAGIARISM H OW TO Rewrite Text in your own words

What is Rewriting is…  Taking the main ideas from original content on a website or other source and putting it in your own words and voice. ** You still must give credit to the original author. **  Taking the main ideas from original content on a website or other source and putting it in your own words and voice. ** You still must give credit to the original author. **

What Rewriting is not…  Keeping sentences, structure, and order exactly the same and only changing a few words.

A tip for ReWriting  Read the passage you are wanting to paraphrase  Think about what things you think are important from the passage  Without looking at the original passage write your summary of the main ideas in your own voice  Read the passage you are wanting to paraphrase  Think about what things you think are important from the passage  Without looking at the original passage write your summary of the main ideas in your own voice

Now let’s practice Re Writing (Miss Kinghorn)  First, read the original passage  In the United States, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a severe snowstorm characterized by strong winds causing blowing snow that results in low visibilities. The difference between a blizzard and a snowstorm is the strength of the wind, not the amount of snow. To be a blizzard, a snow storm must have sustained winds or frequent gusts that are greater than or equal to 56 km/h (35 mph) with blowing or drifting snow which reduces visibility to 400 m or 0.25 mi or less and must last for a prolonged period of time – typically three hours or more.  First, read the original passage  In the United States, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a severe snowstorm characterized by strong winds causing blowing snow that results in low visibilities. 8 Now let’s practice Re Writing (Miss Kinghorn)  Second, pick out the most important ideas that you want to share with your readers.

Now let’s practice Re Writing (Miss Kinghorn)  Third, think about the main ideas you chose. Without looking at the original passage rewrite the ideas in your own voice

Now let’s practice Re Writing (As a class)  First, read the original passage  Western Australia (abbreviated as WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, the Great Australian Bight and Southern Ocean to the south, the Northern Territory to the north-east and South Australia to the south-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world – however, a significant part of it is sparsely populated. The state has about 2.5 million inhabitants (around 11% of the national total), and 92% of the state's population lives in the south-west corner of the state.  First, read the original passage  Western Australia (abbreviated as WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. 13 Now let’s practice Re Writing (With a partner)  First, read the original passage Penguins are a groups of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have counter shaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid and other forms of sea life caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans.  First, read the original passage Penguins are a groups of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. 16 Now let’s practice Re Writing (On your own)  First, read the original passage Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, after Mercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often described as the "Red Planet" because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth.  First, read the original passage Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, after Mercury.
