2 Understanding Clear Instructions Instructions tell how to perform a particular task by: –Considering the audience’s previous experience with the task –Breaking down the task into simple steps –Combining concise language with visuals

3 Uses for instructions Explain how to get to a particular location Perform an emergency procedure Complete an unfamiliar task (this is what we’ll focus on) Operate a piece of equipment

4 Standards of Good Instructions Tell what the instructions are for Present each step as a short command (starts with action verb) 1.Remove the dipstick. 2.Inspect the oil level. 3.Replace the dipstick.

5 Standards of Good Instructions Deliver numbered steps in the order they need to be performed to achieve the desired outcome

6 Standards of Good Instructions Include explanations after commands when needed – to clarify or justify –Remove the lug nuts in a star pattern. This means you will alternate lug nuts. –Put a thin line of oil on the new oil filter’s gasket. This provides a tight seal.

7 Standards of Good Instructions Include appropriate cautions, explanations, and definitions
