Lesson 2: Gimme a BMP!

Best Management Practices (BMPs) BMPs are ways to reduce the amount of water pollution caused by storm water runoff. -Rules put in place to help prevent water pollution -Actions that people take to help prevent pollution from getting into our water

Review There are two different types of water pollution: -Point source pollution -Non-point source pollution

Point Source Pollution Point source pollution can be traced back to a single source. Most of this type of pollution comes through a pipe.

Non-Point Source Pollution Non-point source pollution cannot be identified. Non point-source pollution enters into waterways from various places. One cannot trace where non-point source pollution is coming from.

Build Your Own BMP Exercise Divide into the groups you were in for Lesson 1: -Farmers -Industrial Workers -Golf Course Owners -Residents -Developers Use the box of clay given to your group to build a watershed. -Example: Farmers will build a farm, golf course owners build a golf course, etc.

Build Your Own BMP Exercise Brainstorm ways that your group can prevent pollution in your watershed. Use the clay and other materials you have been given to construct BMPs to keep pollution out of nearby waterways. For help, see the “BMP Fact Sheet” on page 10 in your Water Log Workbook.

Summary Questions What does BMP stand for? Define BMP. List the BMPs and how each can prevent water pollution. How are BMPs useful to people and the community? Draw the BMPs you identified on the BMP map located on page 11 of your Water Log Workbook.

BMP Examples Construction Sites -Silt fencing, straw bales and plastic covers prevent loose dirt from washing into waterways when it rains. -Grass, shrubs, trees and vegetation should be planted after construction. Straw bales Silt fencing

BMP Examples Golf Courses -Fertilizers and pesticides must be used sparingly and according to label directions. -Leaving grass clippings on the course provides a natural fertilizer. -Rock gardens and shrubs can help with storm water infiltration. Farm Area -Wetlands can be used as natural filtration systems for filtering out pesticides and chemicals. -Fences can enclose animals to prevent animal waste from entering waterways. -Check dams and berms can be built to hold soil on- site. -Containment bins can be installed to hold manure.

BMP Examples Industrial Sites -Water must be properly pre-treated before discharging. -Permeable or porous pavement can be used so runoff doesn’t carry oil into waterways. -Vegetated roofs can be implemented to slow runoff rates. Vegetated Roof Porous Concrete

BMP Examples Homeowners -Picking up after pets prevents waste from entering waterways. -Recycling litter keeps trash out of waterways. -Marking storm drains educates others that storm drains lead to the nearest body of water. -Purchasing environmentally- friendly soaps and chemicals prevents toxic chemicals from polluting waterways. Vegetated Roof Porous Concrete

Open Response Questions Identify three types of Best Management Practices that are used to reduce pollution in our water. Describe fully how each BMP reduces the amount of pollution that would eventually end up in our rivers, streams, lakes or ponds.
