2 So How Has it Helped? The museum itself has received 3.5 million visitors since opening, 85 per cent have come from outside the region, 50 per cent of that are foreigners. The new inflow of tourists provides a fresh flow of cash into the economy. It has created 6 or 7 times it’s initial investment.

3 Frank Gehry designed the world famous Guggenheim museum. It was created in an attempt to help the local economy and re-brand Bilbao. Before the museums were created the only thing that put Bilbao on the map was it’s football team, but now everybody knows it for it’s world famous museums.

4 So Why Re-brand? The decline in many industries created high unemployment levels and also many social problems. Further regeneration of the area included an increase in the level of social amenities such as new bus routes and new tram routes. This would help provide access to new jobs created in the city, helping employment levels.

5 Major Players Bilbao got funding from: Local and National government. Private investors The local communities Local tourist board.

7 Success or Failure? Bilbao has been a success in many ways, it has improved the local economy, increased employment, and most importantly has led to the phrase “the Guggenheim effect”. It has led to an increase in tourism and has improved the image of the City nation wide.
