14 This body was found in a peat bog (piles of decaying vegetation) on Tolland Fen in Denmark in May 1950. Two brothers were digging when they suddenly saw a face so fresh they thought they had come across a recent murder. They called the police. The men removed more of the peat to see the man was laying on his right side as if he was asleep his big toe was missing on one foot and he wore only a simple tunic, pointed hat and belt around his waist. Round his neck was a rope noose and an iron neck ring. It was drawn tight around his neck and throat.

15 Who was Tolland Man? Source A – the body found by the Højgård brothers. Source B– A rope noose and neck ring that was buried with Tolland Man. Source C – Scientific report Age – The heart and organs were healthy. The wisdom teeth had grown. These appear in people around the age of 20. Stomach – The man had eaten soup at least 12 hours before he died. The soup was made up of seeds that were connected with spring time. Date of death – When they dug up the grave some plants were trapped under the body. They were about 2000 years old. Source D From a history book German tribes hang traitors from trees and drowned cowards in fens under piles of sticks Source E From a history book The German tribes worship the Goddess of Spring. Every spring a cart carries a statue of the Goddess in a procession. Afterwards the cart and statue are washed by slaves and then the slaves are sacrificed. Source G– The front and back of the Goddess of Spring statue. Source F From a police statement The brothers found the man on Tolland Fen, Denmark wearing only a tunic, belt and pointed hat

16 1.Look at source C the Scientific report and explain why it suggests that the man did not die of old age or disease? 2.Examine source B. What does that suggest happened to Tolland Man? 3.Look at source C. How long ago do you think the body was buried and why? With the person next to you discuss the following questions: Why do you think the man was killed? How do you think the man was killed?

17 Cross referencing and quoting from sources 1.Source D suggests that the man was hung because he was a traitor. Which source could you cross reference this with? 2.What line could you quote from source C to explain why the man didn’t die an old man? 3.Source E talks about a Goddess of Spring. Which source could you cross reference it with to back up that this was an idea that people believed in? 4.Source A shows the man wearing a pointed cap and tunic. Which source can we cross reference it with and quote from to support this idea? 5.Draw a missing persons poster for Tolland man pretending it is your friend who has gone missing. An example is below:- Missing person My brother Stephen has been missing for 3 days. Last seen wearing a pointed cap and tunic. If found please call 07983645273
