1 Global Christian Movement Session 4 Theological Foundations

2 Theology Missiology is applied theology. Formal Definition _ Theology - the study of the nature of God and religious belief. Religious beliefs and theory when systematically developed. Functional Definition _ Theology - is simply an account of what we believe about God. Therefore, theology should control missiology, and our missiology should flow from our theology.

4 Key Principles The truth we believe compels us to action. Worship flows directly into mission. The grand narrative of scripture: Creation – Fall --Redemption - Restoration - all for the purpose of God's glory. Because the Christian mission is God's mission, it is fundamentally a theological task. This mission is rooted in the nature, character, plan and deeds of God.

5 The Sovereign God The author, ruler and goal of the Christian mission. The triune God of scripture is the author of Christian mission. The world belongs to God ( Gen 1) He rules and guide history (Dan. 4: 34-35) He will the conclusion to history ( Rev. 20)

6 Scripture: The Rule of the Christian Mission God exercises his Lordship through His word. This word is illuminated by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is absolutely authoritative and sufficient over all that we think. Responsible exegesis is required to understand the Bible correctly. Exegesis - critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture.

7 Human Rebellion: The Context of Christian Mission God created humanity in his image (Gen 1:26 - 27) Adam’s rebellion bequeathed moral guilt and corruption to the entire human race (Rom 5:12-21) Fallen people justly fall under the wrath of God (Eph 2:3)

8 Human Rebellion: The Context of Christian Mission Realities for humanity: 1.Human guilt is real 2.There is a place called hell 3.No innocent person goes to hell; there are no innocent people 4.Human religion is an attempt to avoid God 5.There is a such thing as human nature 6.Every aspect of human nature is corrupted by the fall of Adam. 7.Human culture is not neutral (grace – sin) 8.Only the power of God can save humanity.

9 Jesus Christ: The Heart of Christian Mission Jesus was in existence before time began. He was and is fully God. Became fully human ( Phil 2:6-11) Born of a virgin (Luke 1:35) Lived a sinless life ( 2 Cor 5:21) Died as a substitute for the sins of humanity. Triumphantly resurrected Ascended to heaven (Acts 2:33) He will come again (Acts 1:11) The perfect prophet, priest and king. Scripture presents Christ as the only way to know God ( John 14: 6) Jesus is the center of Christian theology. The truths are convictional to the Christian mission.

10 The Holy Spirit: The Agent of the Christian Mission Redemption is the work of all three Persons of the Trinity: o God the Father o God the Son o God the Holy Spirit

11 The Holy Spirit: The Agent of the Christian Mission Romans 8:9 – Spirit of God Phil 1:19 – Spirit of Jesus Christ John 16: 8-11 – Convicts of Sin John 3: 1-8 Born Again = Born of the Spirit 1 Cor. 12:4-11; Acts 1:8 - Gifting and Empowerment The Spirit creates the need for an integrated life.

12 Salvation: The Message of the Christian Mission God is Holy and Just He hates Sin He is also loving and gracious He has chosen to redeem the guilty ( Eph 2:1- 4) Salvation comes to sinners by grace. This Grace come through faith alone in Christ alone.

14 Final Considerations Faith Comes Through Hearing ( Romans 10:17) 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Saving Faith is directly connected to Repentance

16 Final Considerations All Peoples the Scope of the Christian Mission Revelation 5:9 - The redeeming group of Christ is both global and people group oriented. Church: The Instrument of the Christian Mission Discipleship – Advance of the Gospel – Fellowship Eschatology: The Historical Framework of Mission A solid grasp of Biblical eschatology gives believers in Jesus every reason to give up every thing persevere through anything for the sake of God’s global glory.
