5 The Biorenewables Development Centre  What is the BDC? –a not-for-profit company that works with industry to develop and demonstrate new processes to convert plants and biowastes into chemicals –£10m investment in people & equipment –grew from 2 centres at University of York, CNAP and GCCE  A unique combination of open access services –Feedstock Development Unit: high throughput systems biology for plants and microbes for biorefining –Process Development Unit: novel, modular, extraction, processing and scale up facilities, bridging the gap between laboratory and industry –Business Development Unit: helps businesses apply renewable technology  Greener technology –Replace petrochemical feedstocks with renewables, guided by LCA, focus on high value, low volume chemicals that don’t compete with food

13 What is BioVale?  An innovation cluster that supports development and promotion of Y&H as an international hub for the bio-based economy  Focus on –High value chemicals from plants and microbes –Natural products –Next generation biofuels and biorefineries –Valorisation of biowaste
