LIBRARY AND DATABASE SEARCH Master Thesis Sustainable development, VT 2015

CONTACT Elisabeth Rydberg, elisabeth.rydberg@ub.uu.seelisabeth.rydberg@ub.uu.se Johanna Rayner, johanna.rayner@ub.uu.se Teaching librarians Biology- and Earth Sciences Library, Uppsala UB www.ub.uu.se

AIM: to be able and capable searchers, on an advanced level HOW: mixing theory with practice

TODAYS AGENDA 10:15 Introduction Subject guide & different types of sources Article databases: search strategies, comparisons & methods Short break Article databases: folllowing citations Where do I start: methods Referencemanagement Extra resourses 12:00 13:15-15:00 : Workshop, in Uppland

WHO are you? WHAT do you know?

1.I have visited the Earth Sicences Library

2. I´ve been to several library- instructions

3. I am familiar with the concept “information literacy”

4. I have a studied social sciences before taking this masterprogram

5. I have a studied natural sciences before taking this masterprogram

6. I have tried searching in article databases, like Web of Science, PubMed…

7. I seldom use more than two keywords when searching for articles

8. I would be able to explain what a peer-reviewed article is.

9. I know what I am going to write my thesis about.

10. I use a reference management program, such as Zotero or EndNote

 Intro; informationskompetens Carolina Rediviva. På 1800-talet kom man till praktsalen via denna trappa. Källa: Ny illustrerad tidning, 1877. INFORMATION LITERACY?

Link:http://ub- eng.uu.se.libguides.com/c.php?g=91477&p=590347 SUBJECT GUIDE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Handbooks, reports, papers from conferences, theses, articles - scientific journals, articles - magazines, articles - news, oral source, webbpages… DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOURCES

Author’s consideration: Primary source or secondary…? How is content controlled…? Who is responsible…? DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOURCES

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES Peer review vs. Review? Peer reviewed = refereed Article is evaluated by peers = same competence as author Articles are most often a primary source like a description of an experiment, a survey…but in the databases you also find: Review = in our context stands for literature review A secondary source as it is a summary of current knowledge on a certain topic collected from many primary sources

IS IT PEER REVIEWED? ULRICHSWEB Find link in your Subject guide ( Page: Articles )… or Databases A-Z

ARTICLE DATA BASES 1.Covering a specific set of journals, the best in the field of interest for the database. 2.Built for searching, you can combine words and operators in many ways. 3.Result is a reference. Linking to fulltext when it is possible to do so. 4.Many functions after the search: filtering, search history, save searches, set alerts, export references…

ARTICLE DATABASES AT UU Interdisciplinary- Web of Science core collection Interdiscipl. (Engineering)- Scopus Environment, toxicology- Environmental sciences and pollution management Earth science- Geobase Medicine - Pubmed Social sciences- Business Source Premier Education- Education research complete, ERIC Biology, biomedicin- BIOSIS (incl. Biol. Abstr)

Searches full text+/- Citation searching(no control) Some filters Advanced searching GOOGLE SCHOLAR? Find reports and scientific articles scholar.google.com /se/de/xx searches academic, authorities, NGOs pages

SUBJECT DATABASES Comparisons, let´s look a test search…

SEARCH STRATEGIES Two main lines of strategies: Search with keywords, combining them in different ways. Block-searching Start with something ”good” – follow citations Sustainable development gender OR women result OR outcome OR effect OR … AND

SEARCH CHARACTERS ” ” = Phrase searching = exactly as what is between Useful when: single numbers, letters or characters are of importance EX: “hepatite A” “C++” * (most common) or ? = Truncation = word stem searching EX: hydrol* retrieves hydrology hydrological hydrologist ( ) = Parentheses = this operation should be done first EX: next page…

BOOLEAN LOGIC AND OR NOT Nile AND (runoff OR precipitation)

BOOLEAN LOGIC LET`S TRY SEARCHING IN: BUSINESS SOURCE PREMIERE

QUESTIONS? SHORT BREAK 10 min Continue – using citations for more information – analyse tools Finding the best keywords – reference handling

FOLLOWING CITATIONS BUSINESS SOURCE PREMIERE WEB OF SCIENCE SCOPUS BIOSIS GOOGLE SCHOLAR

FOLLOWING CITATIONS COMPARISON: same article, ”strategic organizational… Business source premier: times cited:2 Web of science core…:6 Scopus:9 Google scholar:16 Biosis: don’t have article…

Where do I start?

1.Concept map 2.Topic definition 3.Keywords

CONCEPT MAP Concept map adapted from: https://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/lls/students/research_resources/conceptmap.html For each issue, think of sub-concepts that relate to it and connect them to the appropriate issue.

CONCEPT MAP Concept map adapted from: https://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/lls/students/research_resources/conceptmap.html Think of sub-issues that will support each concept.

CONCEPT MAP Concept map adapted from: https://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/lls/students/research_resources/conceptmap.html Here, only this sub-set of the brainstorming concept map will be fully developed.

TOPIC DEFINITION STATEMENT Each element of the map will help you to: generate a list of research questions develop a topic definition statement.

Keywords, add different endings Synonymous Alternative terms Narrower or broader keywords Search strategy METHOD FOR SEARCH STRATEGY

HARVARD

REFERENCEMANAGEME NT? 1.Use the article database. Look for: email- function/Send/Export osv. 2.Universitylibrarys searchtool: find the article/ book = get the reference in the right column. (ub.uu.se) 3.Zotero / Endnote : Referencemanagement programs

REFERENCEMANAGEME NT?

For ex: Earth Sciences Library 26 februari 15:30- 16:30 Find out more and more courses at: http://ub.uu.se/searching-and-writing/reference- management/ OR: www.zotero.org REFERENCEMANAGEME NT?

EXTRA RESOURSES Book a librarian – ub.uu.se/ ask us Interlibrary loans – ub.uu.se / ask us National catalogue: libris.kb.se SLU:s guide for Harvard: http://www.slu.se/en/library/search/search-and- writers-guide/referencing/

EXTRA RESOURSES SLU log on to their resources as long as you still have a valid user ID and password. Visit them – log on as guest…

WORKSHOP 13:15-15:00 Find material for your thesis Try doing a concept map/ key words Try different data bases Advanced search techniques Zotero – install and get going ( on your own computer..)

THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!
