8 Factors of a successful search Determining of goals, the topic of the search Identifying key concepts related to the topic Choosing of sources (IMPORTANT!) Formulation of the search (selection of search terms and their combinations, limiting options) Analysing results

9 Too many search results Use more specific terms Add another concept to make search more specific Search titles or index terms only Limit the search with –Language –Document type –Year Always avoid too generic terms!

13 Why you have to cite With the help of the references the reader can easily locate the sources used Foundation pillar of scientific communication You show what the original information is You can show how well you have studied the topic

14 When to cite Don’t copy other person’s texts as your own Separate your own thoughts and cited information from each other Engineer’s basic data without references You can attach pictures to your thesis without a personal permission from the author Direct quotations in ”quotation marks”

15 How to cite Be consistent – use always the same style in your text references and bibliographic references Use guides for making the references Don’t copy ready-made references
