3 ACCESS provides support services and accommodations for students with disabilities to facilitate their success in reaching their educational goals. MISSION OF ACCESS

4  295 students with disabilities in program for Spring 2012  Spring 2012- 74 students on Honor Roll with 3.0 GPA or higher  Spring 2012- 18 students on President’s List with 3.5 GPA or higher  88 students using e-text  Students from ACCESS program have transferred to CSUSB, UC Berkeley, U of North Dakota, UNA, JNLV, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA ACCESS Statistics

Faculty Notification Letter  Faculty Notification letter will be emailed each semester as an attachment.  Print one Faculty Notification letter for each of your instructors.  Discuss your accommodations with your instructor.  Have instructors sign the back of your letter for later reference.  If you have any medical changes and need additional services, inform ACCESS.

20  Student must have verified mobility / pain issues to use the ergonomic chair.  The issue must be noted on Faculty Notification Letter (FN).  Adjustable tables for wheelchairs are available in the classrooms and in the HTC. Adaptive Furniture

21 Mobility Issues Courtesy Cart  Sign Release of Liability form  See Maria to set up Courtesy Cart schedule  Call to cancel when not on campus.  The Courtesy Cart runs on a schedule. Not a taxi cab service.

22  Faculty notification letter informs the instructor that you need a note-taker.  Instructor makes an announcement to the class.  If no one responds, be persistent.  Check the quality of the notes of the volunteers and choose the best one.  Exchange phone numbers.  Bring your note-taker to the ACCESS desk to register service for gift card.  Pick up free note-taking pads as needed.  Use a digital recorder if your class does not have a competent note-taker available. Note-taker

23 Discuss testing accommodations with your instructor. If you choose to test with ACCESS: If you choose to test with ACCESS:  Request your Testing Accommodation Form by email from Glenda (ghaislip@cmccd.edu). ghaislip@cmccd.edu  Print one form for each test to be taken.  Give form to your instructor AT LEAST ONE WEEK prior to your test.  Make an appointment with Glenda at least three days in advance to take the test. 24 HTC is for use by students with disabilities HTC offers:  Computers available for use  Variety of Tutorials  Assistive Software  Proctoring for tests  Assistance with math and writing  Encourages and supports math study groups Lab hours are posted each semester High Tech Center (HTC)

25  Students must be escorted to the HTC  Request assistance at front desk or by calling (760) 366-3791 ext 5861 or 5863  No food or beverages in the HTC, except for bottled water STUDENT SERVICES POLICIES for the High Tech Center (HTC)

26 HTC Assistance with Reading & Writing Assignments Kurzweil 3000 and Word Q  allows you to self edit by reading your paper to you. Inspiration, a mind mapping software  Logical paragraphs  An essay  Term paper or research paper Townsend Press Practice Tests  Reading 50, 51, or 55

27 MATH TROUBLE MATH TUTOR (DVD)  MATH 57, 50, 40  WORD PROBLEMS  The DVDs have a math instructor demonstrating how to do the problems. You can review the DVD as many times as needed. 28 Equipment is loaned on a semester basis.  First come first served  Corresponds to your accommodations  Checked out one week before semester at the front counter  Due back the last day of the semester  If not returned, a hold is placed on your college records.  If lost or broken, you will replace it. We recognize normal wear and tear. Equipment

29 Digital Recorder Digital Recorder  Sign Tape Recording Policy  Check your notes against the recorded lecture to improve your note-taking skills  Check the accuracy of your note-taker’s notes  Listen to lectures again to refresh your memory

30 Smart Pen  Alternative to note taking and digital recorder  Increases independence

31 AlphaSmart  The Alpha Smart is a mini word processor that allows you to write in-class notes, assignments, and papers.  Download your work to a computer in the HTC or at home.

32 Talking Spell Checker  Check your spelling for writing assignments  Can look up definitions and synonyms  Learn how to pronounce words  Have games and other learning tools  Used for essay exams

33 Hearing Impaired  Assistive Listening Device available for the Hearing Impaired.  You are able to hear the lecture without any interference  Closed Captioned videos.  ASL Interpreter
