Phases of the Moon Question: Does the Moon emit light or simply reflect light? –Video: Moon 15

Phases of the Moon Moon phases: Different forms that the Moon takes in its appearance from Earth.

Phases of the Moon Waxing Phases : Means more of the illuminated half of the Moon can be seen each night.

Phases of the Moon Full Moon: Occurs when all of the Moon’s surface facing the Earth reflects light. Video: Why We Always See One Side of the Moon. 1:30

Phases of the Moon Waning Moon : You see less of the illuminated half each night.

Sun-Moon-Earth

Phases of the Moon We have seen what Earth does to represent one day; what does the moon do? Pair share-5 minutes The Moon will travel 1/29 th of the way around its orbit of the Earth in a counterclockwise direction (as seen from the ceiling); this would be taking a small step to the right. Question: Where did the word month come from and what does it mean? –Month: A period of time that can be measured by the movement of the Moon.

Sun-Moon-Earth Does the Moon rotate? The Moon does rotate, once per revolution, which means the same side is always facing the Earth. Demo using two balls, one with a X to represent the Moon, the other the Earth.

Sun-Moon-Earth Solar Eclipse: Occurs when the Moon moves directly between the Sun and Earth and casts a shadow over part of Earth.

Sun-Moon-Earth Umbra : The darkest portion of the Moon’s shadow.

Sun-Moon-Earth What is a Lunar Eclipse? –Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. Earth casts a shadow upon the Moon.

Sun-Moon-Earth Moon Phases and Eclipses Lab

Sun-Moon-Earth Solar Eclipse Demonstration: 1.Direct beam of flashlight on the larger ball. 2.Move smaller ball through the beam until its shadow falls on the larger ball. 3.Adjust the distance between the 2 balls until the shadow of the smaller ball completely darkens the larger. 4.Demonstrate differences in orbital planes

Sun-Moon-Earth Moon Phases and Eclipses 1.Identify which phase(s) of the Moon make(s) it possible for an eclipse to occur. 2.Infer why a lunar and solar eclipse do not occur every month 3.Explain why only a few people have experienced a total solar eclipse. 4.Diagram the positions of the Sun, Earth, and the Moon during a first quarter moon. 5.Infer why it might be better to call a full moon a half moon.

Sun-Moon-Earth Question: Why are there so many more craters on the Moon compared to the Earth?

Sun-Moon-Earth When meteorites and other objects strike the Moon, they leave behind depressions. Impact basin : Depression left behind by an object striking the Moon.

Sun-Moon-Earth Question: Is there water on the Moon? NASA finds 'significant' water on moon –November 13, 2009 What is the significance of water on the Moon. –Astronauts will not have to bring their own water.

Sun-Moon-Earth "When we say 'water on the Moon,' we are not talking about lakes, oceans or even puddles," explained Carle Pieters, M3's principal investigator from Brown University, Providence, R.I. "Water on the Moon means molecules of water and hydroxyl that interact with molecules of rock and dust specifically in the top millimeters of the Moon's surface. Video: When We Left the Earth
