The portrait is based on an 1824 print by Kepper. Boulton states that the lithograph was based in part on the copper engraving of M. N. Bate made in London in 1819. The great grandfather of Salas was Antonio Salas, a personal friend of Bolívar and one of the few who painted him from life in 1822, 1824, 1826, and 1829. References Boulton, A. May 24, 1853 Description Portrait of Simón Bolívar in military attire. notes This anonymous work is in the style of José Gil de Castro, the Lima artist who painted Bolívar in 1825. Bolivar is reputed to have deemed Gil de Castro to have painted the most lifelike representation of himself. An engraved copy of this painting was done by James B.
