Vocabulary  Unicellular- made up of only one cell.  Multicellular- made up of more than one cell.  Cytoplasm-jelly like fluid has many chemicals that help cell stay alive  Organelle- means "little organ" structures inside the cell that carry out different functions.  Nucleus - cell's command center. controls cell actions, contains the DNA  Membrane- holds the parts of the cell together, provides a barrier between the cell and its surroundings

Cells  Cells are the building blocks of life.  Cells are the smallest part of a living thing that can carry out all the processes of life.  Functions of cells:  Take in nutrients and remove waste.  Fight disease.  Transport oxygen  Carry signals from the brain to muscles for movement.

Parts of a Cell  Cell membrane- a covering that holds parts of the cell together.  Nucleus- controls the cell’s activities.  The nucleus is enclosed in its own membrane.  Cytoplasm- jellylike substance containing many chemicals to keep the cell functioning.  https://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetic s/cells/ https://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetic s/cells/

Single-Celled Organisms  Some organisms are made up of only one cell called single- called organisms.  Also known as unicellular.  They perform all life processes within a single cell.  Single-Celled Organisms are simple life forms.  Examples: bacteria, algae, amoeba (animal that lives in pond water, or salt water, animals, and humans)  They move, find food, grow, and make new organisms.

Multi-Celled Organisms  Multi-celled organisms are made up of more than one cell.  Plants, animals, and other living things are made up of many cells.  Made up of different types of cells that have certain jobs to do.  Nerve cells, white blood cells, red blood cells, and nerve cells.

Tissue  Similar cells that work together form tissue.  Tissues that work together form organs (major body parts ex: heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs).  The organs work together as a system to perform a job in order to keep the animal or human alive.  Organs that work together to perform a function form a system.  Humans have ten major body systems.
