2 CHINA Very mountainous  2/3 mountains and desert  Gobi Desert (northernmost on Earth)  Himalayas/Plateau of Tibet-created 50 million years ago when a piece of continent collided with Asia (moved 15cm/year)  Highest Mt. range in the world  Mt. Everest is highest peak in the world

3 FARMING 14% can be farmed  Double cropping  Terrace farming  Climate impacts what can be grown  North-Wheat Grains  South-Rice

4 POPULATION Most people live on the eastern side (North China Plain) 1.3 billion people

5 RIVERS Chang/Huang/Xi Jiang are important rivers Three Gorges Dam (Largest Dam in the world)  Flood control/electricity  1½ miles wide-600 feet high  $26 billion but has already produced enough electricity to pay for itself

6 JAPAN An archipelago (a group of islands) 80% mountains

7 POPULATION  Almost ½ of the population lives on less than 3% of the land

8 MODERN INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY But Japan has few natural resources

9 FARMING 12% of land is farmed

10 NORTH/SOUTH KOREA A peninsula (a piece of land surrounded by water on three side)

11 LIMITED RESOURCES

12 DEVELOPMENT North Korea developing nation Use similar farming methods as China/Japan

13 South Korea is a developed nation
