3 Art. No. 1 - Recognition and definition of dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dysorthography. This law recognizes dyslexia, dysgraphia, misspelling and dyscalculia as specific learning disorders, also known as DSA, occurring in students with normal cognitive abilities and without pathological forms which may also be a major limitation to certain activities of daily living. 4 Art. No. 2 - Aims promote school success, also through educational support measures (special education teachers) ensure the right to education adopt appropriate forms of evaluation complying with students’needs reduce relational and emotional hardships Law 170/2010

5 Art. No. 2 – Aims train teachers and awake parents to the issues related to disabilities encourage early diagnosis and rehabilitative courses increase communication and cooperation between families, schools and health services during education and training courses ensure equal opportunities for further education, employment and independent living Law 170/2010

6 Disability diagnosis is carried out by the national health service (by accredited facilities or specialists Schools have to contact families so as to ensure timely interventions capable of detecting suspected cases of DSA students Schools inform families about students who have persistent difficulties Art. 7 Art. No.4 – Training at school In the years 2010 and 2011, 2 million Euros were spent to ensure adequate training concerning problems related to DSA, aimed to identify early signals and to apply teaching strategies, and appropriate evaluation methodology Law 170/2010

8 Art. No. 5 Supportive educational and didactic measures Students with DSA are entitled to individualized Education programmes and teaching flexibility during their educational cycles and university studies as well Law 170/2010

9 Art. No.5 - Supportive Educational and didactic measures The Ministry of Education, according to the State financial budget, grants students with DSA: a)an individualized and personalized learning programme based on individual needs b)the introduction of compensatory instruments, including alternative learning methods and technologies, as well as supportive instruments Students may also be exempted from non-essential levels of performance which do not impair the quality of learning c)Foreign language teaching: the use of compensatory instruments that encourage verbal communication and gradual learning rhythms

10 Law 170/2010 Art. No. 6 - Measures for family members Family members related to students with learning disorders (first cycle of education only) engaged in educational supportive activities at home, are entitled to flexible working hours
