2 Welcome Back to STAAR bootcamp! 12 Days! 1. Pick up the worksheet 2. Find your CA Essay. 3. Write your hw 4. Start your Do Now  Do Now: What is the difference between the following sentences taken from an essay?  1. For example, some people might not like being alone, and that could lead to them committing suicide.  2. For example, Robin Williams was alone, and that is partly what led to his suicide. Even though he was depressed, having people around could have prevented his death.  HW: Finish 9 journals and independent reading by March 20 th. I will ask questions about your book, so make sure you actually read THE WHOLE THING!

4 Do Now Share Out (3 min)  Which point was stronger?  Which paper do you want to read?  Why?

5 Key Points/CA Review (7 min)  Most of you got 3s and 4s on your CA3 Essay.  You had good theses, but you didn’t have specific evidence. * Your examples are the meat of the hamburger; they should be good and make people think.  Go through your essay and highlight or underline your concrete detail.  If you got a 4 or below, write a more specific example to the side (doesn’t have to be a full sentence)  If both of your examples were specific (you got a 5 or above), help a partner.  Pass papers back in.

6 The English EOC  5 hour time limit  March 30 th for 9 th Grade  April 1 st for 10 th grade  Assesses Reading, Persuasive Writing (10 th ), Expository Writing (9 th ), Writing about Reading, Revising and Editing  Must pass in order to graduate from high school.

7 Reading: How are they done differently? EOC Facts Mix of Non-Fiction and Fiction Texts, some poetry 40 to 50 Reading Questions

8 Open-Ended Responses Tests for:  Comprehension of the passage(s).  Comprehension of the question.  Using text evidence as support.  Giving context and details in writing.  Giving a conclusion/concluding sentence. EOC Facts Three to Four OERs on the test, Most points are lost on the OERs, If you write good OERs and solid essays, you’re very likely to pass the test!

15 Rosseau’s formula for success in 1 hour  Copy the following time guide:  5 min brainstorming  15 min essay house  30-35 min writing  5 min proofreading

16 Part 1: Brainstorming! Copy the following steps!  1. Make a T chart for each side AND THEN PICK ONE! (What you have on that side of the T-chart becomes your reasons/topic sentences)  2. Brainstorm SPECIFIC examples.  Use M-BACH to brainstorm  M-movies, B-books, A-anecdotes, C- celebrities, H- historical events/people  3. Use words from the prompt to write your claim!

17 Try It! 30 min Answer the following prompt using the 26 lined box on the back of the exemplar essay: Should respect be earned or freely given? Why? Tips and Tricks Address counter- argument within the conclusion or within the introduction. Use logos, ethos, and pathos.
