NSF IUSE Workshop Goal: Determine potential for moving forward with parts of proposal without NSF Funding

NSF IUSE I mproving U ndergraduate S TEM E ducation Broad program for undergraduate STEM Education NSF IUSE Goals Improve STEM Teaching & Learning Environments Improve knowledge base Implement evidence-based pedagogies Broaden Participation & Institutional Capacity for STEM Learning Increase number and diversity of STEM majors Use evidence-based strategies Build the Professional STEM Workforce for Tomorrow

NSF IUSE Proposal – High Altitude Ballooning Joint Proposal - 8 organizations Letters of participation – 12 additional organizations Submitted January 2015 (no feedback from NSF yet) $2M Budget

Overarching Goals of Proposal Widen use of ballooning to 50 new universities/100 new faculty Builds on 2 previous NSF CCLI/TUES grants (Taylor University led) ~25 universities using ballooning AHAC initiated Stratospheric Ballooning Association (SBA) initiated Determine how to increase and consistently obtain learning outcomes Statistically and practically significant increases shown (Pre/Post test) Results vary widely from instructor to instructor

Strategy of Proposal Widen use to 50 new universities/100 new faculty Issues: 1) Ballooning not understood by academics (survey results) 2) Few STEM applications broadly disseminated Plan: “Wow” Science Learning Applications 2017 Total Eclipse Weather Cyclone Cosmic Radiation Mulit-institutional Projects (Constellations of Balloons) Determine how to increase and consistently obtain learning outcomes Plan: Education Research Focus on faculty development & instruction Evaluation and Research Questions Data Collection and Analysis

Strategy of Proposal “Wow” Science /Multi-institutional Constellations Support Areas New Technology New Institution Integration Process – RTIE Recruit Train Implement (ballooning into new institution) Enfold (into Professional Learning Community) Professional Learning Community (PLC) Development Other Efforts Preservice Teacher Education (Education Undergrads) Diversity

How to do it: Planning, logistics, technology, equipment, launching, data collection, analysis At my institution: Approval, costs, liability, consider career goals, peers With my students: Fit to learning goals, courses, curriculum Student Learning Successfully: Engaged active learning, formative assessment, refining teaching and learning, professional community Research findings Career success Need to know: to use ballooning with your students –focus on faculty development & instruction

–focus on Faculty development & instruction Evaluation and Research Questions For instructors engaged in ballooning, how and why did they 1.Participate in their first training event, continued training, first and later launch experiences with undergraduate students? 2.Engage with the community of ballooners as a “professional learning community”? 3.Understand and use evidence-based instructional practices to implement engaged student learning in STEM content? In particular, problem-based learning and formative assessment? 4.Find success with and overcome the challenges related to implementing ballooning with their students? Including students from groups underrepresented in STEM? How do 1, 2, 3 influence 4?

Data Collection –focus on Faculty development & instruction A.Master Faculty Participant Database Attendance at every event Demographics: institution, department, subjects taught B.Survey on Implementing Evidence-based Instruction through Ballooning (longitudinal) Understanding of and confidence in using ballooning with undergraduates Understanding of and confidence in using evidence-based instruction Successes and challenges using ballooning Experiences with professional learning communities related to ballooning C. Comparative Case Study Observations and interviews Contextual information on faculty and their students’ ballooning experiences Survey on Student Impact through Ballooning D. Training Material Archive Workshop and webinar slides, instructor guides, curricular materials
