1 Environment Energy Agri-food Sea Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique LABORATORY OF PROCESS ENGINEERING FOR ENVIRONMENT AND FOOD

2 A focused approach Fundamental and applied research to develop engineering processes in the areas of Environment, Food and exploitation of marine resources. A unique team of experts (human force) More than 190 researchers, lecturers, engineers, technicians, PhDs and post-docs One of the largest research groups in its sector in France A reputation and international collaborations The GEPEA conducts research in partnership with public bodies and companies at home and abroad. The hundred publications per year, a dozen patents, several Prizes for innovation and three start-up companies demonstrate GEPEA’s ability to conduct both fundamental research and technology transfer to industry. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique

5 This theme, through an integrated approach (bioreactor engineering and separation process/modelling biosystems), focuses on the study of bioprocesses. It is divided into three themes: (1) the photosynthetic microorganisms valorisation (hydrogen, lipids, metabolites): photobioreactors production/ biomass harvest/extraction-purification of metabolites, (2) the treatment and recycling of water (sea water, aquaculture water, ship grey water, ballast water and fishing co-products), (3) the design, the study of biosensors (microbial, affinity) and the biodegradation of chemical pollutants. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique THE FOUR RESEARCH THEMES OF THE LABORATORY GEPEA Theme 1: Bioprocesses/separation within the marine environment Value adding to biomass, membrane separation methods, photo- bioreactors, chromatography, biosensors, biodegradation, eco- toxicology Theme 2: Energy Engineering Optimisation of energy systems, Modelling energy transfer, Value adding to wastes This theme aims to optimize complete energy systems (engines and processes) in their interaction with their environment and integrating production, transport/distribution, storage and energy management. In particular, the energy recovery from waste can combine environmental protection and energy production. The transfer intensification, the development of multi-energy processes and optimal control are also part of the energetic eco-efficiency sought. A second thematic is the modelling and optimization of multi-energy and multi-purpose energy systems under constraints, involving a strong interaction between supply and energy demand.

Separation processes with transfers reactions (chemical or biological) are studied by taking an integrated approach to improving existing processes or development of innovative processes. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique The theme MAPS focuses on the impact of processes on the structure and properties (texture, colour, aroma) of biological matrices (food) and non- biological (polymers, elastomers). MAPS brings together three themes: (i) thermo-mechanical state changes, (ii) interfaces - dispersed systems and (iii) sensory - interaction processes. Particular emphasis is given to the effect of combined pressure and temperature on phase changes and their impact in terms of structure and properties of matrices. The fields of application include: food preparation (especially grain cooking, reactive extrusion, foams and emulsions, etc); micro- encapsulation; and synthetic polymers (rubber, plastic injection, etc).
