Alcohols all have a carbon joined to –O-H Draw in a skeletal style all 4 of the alcohols with the molecular formula C 4 H 10 O Once this is complete verbally agree on their names with your neighbours. Transfer your answers to paper when you have compared them with a neighbour (leave a bit of room we will annotate them later) Stretch and Challenge: C 5 H 12 O find all 8 Warm Up Task - Mini Whiteboard
2
Naming, Classification and Introduction to the Reactions of…
3
After this lesson check that you can: 1.Draw and name simple alcohols 2.Classify them by type 3.Draw the initial oxidation products of simple alcohols There is a lot more that you can pick up along the way too if you really go for it! For example you should be better at finding isomers
5
How many unique substances?
7
The Answers for extension task C 5 H 12 O
8
After this lesson check that you can: 1.Draw and name simple alcohols 2.Classify them by type 3.Draw the initial oxidation products of simple alcohols There is a lot more that you can pick up along the way too if you really go for it!
9
As each alcohol appears clearly write its name down on a mini whiteboard and show it
10
Have paper and pen ready to record any that you didn’t manage or simply want a record of
11
I’ll show you one example first
12
Example Don’t copy it – use Moodle later if you want it
13
There may be a few the same, so you may want to hold back on the rubbing out, until you see the next one
14
Quickly Just print the name !
17
Do you know how to view structures in chemsketch ?
18
Draw in a displayed style 2-methylbutan-1-ol
19
Your ability at naming alcohols?
20
After this lesson check that you can: 1.Draw and name simple alcohols 2.Classify them by type 3.Draw the initial and further oxidation products of simple alcohols Success?
21
Classifying Alcohols Three types: primary, secondary and tertiary Examine the carbon with the OH group on. Count the number of immediate carbon neighbours attached. 1 (or 0) = primary 2 = secondary 3 = tertiary ????
22
Look back at the alcohols from the very start of the lesson and classify each
23
You have 30 seconds to do this starting now! That’s all the time let’s see how you did (mini boards) Classify each of the 4 alcohols from the start of the lesson
25
Primary, Secondary or Tertiary
26
Your ability at classifying alcohols?
27
Stretch and Challenge Name NIS!!
28
No calling out answers for these questions! Wait your turn - thanks
29
After this lesson check that you can: 1.Draw and name simple alcohols 2.Classify them by type 3.Draw the initial oxidation products of simple alcohols Success Success?

Oxidation Numbers in Organic Chemistry Useful but the numbers aren’t tested Following the rules for determining the oxidation number for an individual carbon atom leads to:oxidation number oxidation number +4 carbon dioxidecarbon dioxide oxidation number +2 carboxylic acidscarboxylic acids oxidation number 0 ketones, aldehydesketonesaldehydes oxidation number -2 alkenes, alcoholsalkenesalcohols oxidation number -4 alkanesalkanes oxidation

Oxidising Agents While lots of chemicals can be used to oxidise alcohols; in the lab it always tends to be acidified potassium dichromate It is orange before it reacts It turns green afterwards (if it reacts) This almost always gets examined! Remember green for go (like traffic lights)
37
Mini Whiteboard – warm up task Draw and name a tertiary alcohol with 6 carbons and 12 hydrogens.
38
A Handy ‘rule of thumb’ In organic chemistry Oxidation often takes place by simultaneously: 1.Increasing the number of bonds between C and O 2.Decreasing the number of bonds between C and H C to O C to H
39
R can start with C or H Moving up to the next oxidation level From oxidising agent

Your ability at drawing the first oxidation products of a given alcohol?
48
After this lesson check that you can: 1.Draw and name simple alcohols 2.Classify them by type 3.Draw the initial oxidation products of simple alcohols Success Success?
