1. YEAR 6 SATS AND TEACHER ASSESSMENTS 2016 Welcome

2. Purpose of the meeting is to:  Explain more about government expectations and terminology  Timetable and logistics of SATs week  Discuss Teacher Assessments  Hopefully answer any questions

3. SATs Tests These are national tests set by the government at the end of Year 2 and Year 6. They are used as a tool for measuring progress between KS1 and KS2. The tests comprise of Reading comprehension, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test and Mathematics test. The results of the tests are then sent on electronically to secondary schools, published in leagues tables and used by Ofsted.

4. Your child’s test outcome will be on their school report alongside their Teacher Assessment. This year the tests are far more rigorous and challenging due to the new curriculum which was implemented in September 2015. Year 6 have worked really hard this year and risen to the challenges of the new curriculum and we expect their SATs results to reflect this.

5. No Levels This is the first year children will be graded at the end of Year 6 by a scaled score rather than a level (4b etc). We don’t yet know what the national scaled score range will be but 100 will represent the expected standard. A progress measure will be calculated based on your child’s KS1 level from Year 2. As a trial this year the government are going to compare nationally similar children at KS1 (all children at 2B) with their scaled score. The expectation will be that your child compares the same or better. This has its pitfalls as we are not comparing like for like!

6. What is my child going to be tested on? Reading Comprehension Approximately 37 questions. Tests a mixture of fiction and non fiction. The test lasts for one hour. The types of questions could be:  Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’  Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’  Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’  Short constructed response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. Hoe does the writer increase the tension throughout the paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

7. Grammar and Punctuation Test A short-answer paper with approximately 49 questions lasting 45 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:  Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’  Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/compete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’ Spelling Test 20 words read as dictation in individual sentences lasting approx. 15mins.

8. Maths Tests 1. Arithmetic paper 1 (approx. 36 questions testing calculation skills lasting for 30mins. 2. Reasoning papers 2 and 3 (approx. 20 questions in each paper lasting 40mins. Papers 2 and 3 will involve questions types, including:  Multiple choice  True or false  Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart  Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

Teacher Assessments The language and terminology is as follows: Reading  Growing development of the expected standard  Working at the expected standard Writing  Growing development of the expected standard  Working towards the expected standard  Working at the expected standard  Working at greater depth within the expected standard

10. Maths  Growing development of the expected standard  Working at the expected standard Science  Working at the expected standard These Teacher Assessments are submitted before the SATs results are published. They reflect how your child works in the classroom on a daily basis, not under test conditions.

12. Obviously it is important that your child attends school every day during SATs week. If your child is unwell on any of the test days please call the school immediately. Children have up to five days to take the tests due to illness. To support your child throughout the tests and help them to do their best, please ensure that your child: gets to bed at a reasonable time, comes to school having had breakfast, well organised with the correct equipment and is as calm and focussed as possible. Children will need: an ink pen and cartridges or handwriting pen, HB pencils, a rubber, a long ruler with cm/mm and a protractor.
