2 Role of the Welsh in Education Officers Rôl Swyddogion y Gymraeg mewn Addysg Supporting schools in raising standards in Welsh as a second language This will include: Curriculum support and advice to individual schools Discussions with heads and co-ordinators Supporting practitioners to ensure appropriate language coverage (refer to Welsh continuum) through oracy led lessons feeding into quality reading and writing activities, introducing pupils to a variety of quality resources and a range of relevant genres Classroom support for targeted staff members – sharing and modelling effective methodology and team teaching Whole staff training Training sessions for support staff Supporting schools during standardisation and moderation meetings within clusters Advice on WEG expenditure and purchase of resources

3 WEG – Welsh in Education Grant, Grant y Gymraeg mewn addysg Allocated to each school to support in raising standards of Welsh Headteachers are requested to submit expenditure plans by the end of the summer term. The plans can be adapted during the year if necessary How the grant can be spent: Training for teachers Supply cover, eg to release co-ordinators to develop Welsh within their school by working with Welsh in Education Officer or attend cluster/ PLC meetings or to release teachers to share good practice Resources

7 Welsh in Education Officers are available to support the meetings Schools are encouraged to arrange standardisation and moderation sessions within their schools Schools should gather some evidence (oracy, reading and writing) A school portfolio should contain examples demonstrating the staff understanding of outcomes and levels (please use the portfolio templates which are on the WEO website if you wish) A pupil profile should contain examples of one pupil’s work gathered from one year’s work, eg 3 oracy, 3 reading, 3 writing) Co-ordinators should attend cluster moderation meetings to ensure consistency within clusters The expected level of achievement at year 6 is level 4. Pupils who are showing safe level 4 characteristics at the end of year 5 or beginning year 6 should be encouraged to reach level 5 (please refer to WJEC document Moving pupils from level 4 to level 5)

8 General Reminders Pethau i’w Cofio Timetabling Welsh sessions: Pupils benefit from short, regular Welsh sessions (daily if possible), with longer sessions at KS2 (30 – 40 minutes) when necessary, eg for reading and writing tasks. When practising language, familiar or new, try to give the pupils plenty of opportunities to use the language themselves, allowing them to ask and answer questions to their peers and also lead language games. Helpwr Heddiw has proved very successful in raising the profile of Welsh in many schools. The weighting for Welsh second language is 70% oracy, 15% reading, 15% writing; therefore oracy should be your main priority. A variety of oracy, reading and writing activities can be found in the scheme of work. If you require assistance at any time please do not hesitate to contact a team member
