1 Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Math for Indiana Grades 3-4-5 Bob Trammel robertwtrammel@msn.com Fewer Clearer Higher

2 Our Goals and Expectations Learn all the information that I can about the Common Core State Standards. (CCSS) Learn about Standards for Mathematical Practice. (SMP) Learn about Standards for Mathematical Content. (SMC) Learn how to correctly implement SMP and SMC together for school year 2011-12.

3 A Few Things to Start With! Cell Phones Off Please Be an Active Participant! This is your workshop not mine! Let’s start with a quick introduction and warm welcome.

4 Ice Breaker Activity On the back of your agenda ………….. simple statements Write 4 simple statements about yourself. Make 3 of them true and 1 of them false in random order. Don’t make the statements too complicated. Keep these hidden please. In a couple of minutes we will have some fun.

5 Bob’s 4 Statements false See if you can pick the false statement from the below list! I ride a Harley motorcycle for fun. I’m a graduate of Notre Dame. I played on my high school basketball team. I have taught elementary school.

6 Essential Questions to Ponder! How stressed-out should I be about the CCSS? (Common Core State Standards) Who is going to design the assessments? What caused the CCSS? When are they (CCSS) going to impact me and the kids? Where can I find resources to help?

Label each sheet as Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5 On each grade level sheet, place the standard code……i.e., 3.NF. 1 Summary each standard in your own words. If possible give an example to help explain the standard. Old stuff, new stuff, I’m too sure stuff Leave space at the bottom for later!

14 Now Let’s Look Across Grades>> Fewer? Clearer? Higher?

15 Standards Mathematical Practices (SMP) 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

16 Assignments by Groups Standards Mathematical Practices(SMP) Group 1 ………….. SMP 1 and 6 Group 2………….. SMP 2 and 3 Group 3……………SMP 4 and 5 Group 4………….. SMP 7 and 8 Group 5………… Divided Among Groups 1-4 Use the Common Core State Standard Handout Give a summary of each SMP……debrief 15 minutes.

17 Assignments by Grade Level In your mixed groups, identify the mathematical practice(s) that would be used to teach each given standard. Give specific example(s) please. MP 1 Make sense of the problem MP 2 Reasoning MP 3 Argument –Thinking MP 4 Modeling MP 5 Use of Tools MP 6 Precision MP 7 Structure MP 8 Patterns

21 Rationale Behind CCSS NCLB has some holes in this federal legislation. Equity issue from state to state. Funding problems. Special needs students and ELL students. States were mandated to make substantial educational changes on their own. States can no longer set educational standards and expectations independently! We need to better-prepare our students for the future.

22 An Example of an Equity Issue. MEAP Grade 8 Math 2009 35 MC Items

23 MEAP (Michigan Education Assessment Program) Functional Independence Grade 8 Mathematics Released Item Booklet. What is the rule for the pattern below? 4, 8, 12, 16,_____ A add 2 B add 1 C add 4

24 MEAP (Michigan Education Assessment Program) Functional Independence Grade 8 Mathematics Released Item Booklet. Use the coins below to answer question 33. How much money is shown? A 27¢ B 37¢ C 47¢

25 Who’s Behind CCSS Initiative? NGA (National Governors’ Association) CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers)

26 How are we going to assess these Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? PARCC Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers CTB Mc Graw-Hill Out 41 states involved in these assessments Move to better prepare our students for the future……..let it be college ………let it be work.

27 How is this stuff (CCSS) going to roll-in?

28 School Year 2011-12 CCSS (Common Core State Standards) Kindergarten will implement the CCSS first. All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana Academic Standards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level. ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure only IAS.

29 “Transition” CCSS for School Year 2011-12 Indiana Academic Standards (IAS) classified as “classroom assessed” or “ISTEP+ assessed.” CCSS to be taught school year 2011-12…..a transition to school year 2014-15. When??? How???

30 March ISTEP+

31 4 th Grade CCSS for this year. 1. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers (limited to whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000) to any place. (CCSS 4.NBT.3) Note: This extends IAS 4.1.3 from whole numbers to 10,000 to whole numbers to 1,000,000. 2. Introduce multiplying a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number and multiplying two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. (CCSS 4.NBT.5) Note: This extends IAS 4.2.5 from multiplying numbers up to 100 by numbers up to 10 to multiplying numbers up to 4 digits by 1-digit numbers and also multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. 3. Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions (limited to denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6) on a number line diagram. (CCSS 3.NF.2) Note: Extends IAS 3.1.8, 3.1.9, 3.1.10, 3.3.7 in terms of the conceptual understanding and representation of fractions and the use of the number line. Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line. (CCSS 3.NF.2a) 4. Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b. (CCSS 4.NF.3) Note: Extends the concepts in IAS 4.1.5, 4.1.6, 4.1.7, 4.2.8. Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole. (CCSS 4.NF.3a) Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 ; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8 ; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8. (CCSS 4.NF.3b) Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. (CCSS 4.NF.3c) Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. (CCSS 4.NF.3d) 5. Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model. (CCSS 4.NF.7)

32 School Year 2012-13 CCSS (Common Core State Standards) Kindergarten will implement the CCSS for the second year and grade 1 for the first year. All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana Academic Standards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level. ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure IAS and pilot specific CCSS items.

33 School Year 2013-14 (Common Core State Standards) Kindergarten will implement the CCSS for the third year, grade 1 for the second year, and grade 2 for the first year. All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana Academic Standards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level. ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure IAS and pilot specific CCSS items.

34 School Year 2014-15 (Common Core State Standards) CCSS fully implemented at this time. New PARCC Assessments (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) will be administered at grades 3-HS) These PARCC assessments will be done on computers. Probably three or four times during the year. New cut-scores from the input of 25 states.

35 This was a quick overview of CCSS. Questions……..I know you have lots of them!!
