3 Our Changing World: An invitation to ponder…

4 Are our students ready for the future?  Fewer than 10% of our college and university students study abroad.  2/3 of young adults in America can’t find Iraq on a map and 3/4 think English is the most widely spoken language on the planet.  Only 1/3 of American students are proficient in world studies.  …Yet 93% of Americans believe international knowledge is important. Here is a look at the facts…you decide.

15 Our 21 st Century Problems  Are more complex, interconnected, and borderless  Global causes and global & local consequences Examples:  War/Terrorism  Refugees  Climate change  Global health – Ebola, Aids, Malnutrition  Internet freedom  Human/Workers’ Rights  Global economics ….just to name a few…we are all effected by what happens by what happens in the world.

16 This is global competency:  The knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to navigate and succeed in today’s interconnected world.  Globally competent individuals are life-long learners, have an appreciation for cultural differences, an ability to understand and consider multiple perspectives, critical and comparative thinking skills, problem solving abilities, comfort with ambiguity and change, and understand globally significant issues.  Good thinkers & problem solvers, not just good test- takers  Students learn how to think rather than what to think about critical global and community issues.

17 Global Students will…  Investigate the world beyond one’s own immediate environment, framing significant problems and conducting well-crafted and age-appropriate research  Recognize perspectives, others’ and one’s own, while articulating and explaining such perspectives thoughtfully and respectfully.  Communicate ideas effectively with diverse audiences, bridging geographic, linguistic, ideological and cultural barriers.  Take action to improve conditions viewing oneself as a player in the world and participating reflectively.

24 What else can we do?  Establish a global competency committee (PLC)  Modify the curriculum, globalize courses  Establish a global studies diploma (GSD) program  Invite globally-focused speakers and performers  Participate in globally-focused service projects  Encourage establishment of globally focused extra-curricular activities and clubs i.e. International Club  Hold globally focused movie nights/events  Create an International Week
