KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY. Page 59 of INB

Essential Question: ■What is the relationship between temperature, speed of the particles and the KE of gas molecules?

Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). ■All Particles are always in motion. ■Explains how particles move in all the states.

GASES: ■Ideal Gases: a Hypothetical gas that fits all the assumptions of KMT. ■5 Assumptions:

5 Assumptions ■1) Gases are made of a large number of particles that are far apart. – 1000x greater volume then liquid. – Explains why gases are compressible. ■2) Collision between particles and walls are elastic. –No loss of total K.E.

5 Assumptions ■3) Particles are in continues, rapid motion. ■4) There are no forces of attraction between gas particles. ■5) Temperature depends on the average K.E. of the particles. K.E. = ½ MV 2

Real Gases: ■Do not act completely to the assumptions of KMT. ■@ high pressure and low temperature, the K.E. is insufficient to over come the other forces acting on the particles. ■Nonpolar and monatomic molecules act more like ideal gases

Question 1 page 58 1)Which assumption would explain a)Expansion b)Fluidity c)Low density d)Diffusion e)Compressibility

Top of page 58 Review Questions. 2) What happens when a gas is compressed? 3) What happens when a gas is heated/cooled? 4) What is the relationship between temperature, speed of the particles and the KE of gas molecules?
