Unit9-main Part A Listening Part B Viewing, Listening and Speaking Part C Speaking Workshop Part D Quiz Getting Ready Part E Fun Time
3
A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his/her spare time. Hobbyists raise pets, build model ships, climb mountains, raise flowers, go fishing, skiing, skating, and swimming. Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and play musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies, and from shells to stamps. Getting Ready Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions, and then share your answers with the whole class. 1. What is hobby about? Share your opinion with your partner.
4
Getting Ready People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even yield financial profit. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby. Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recover from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give bedridden or wheel chair patients something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take up interesting hobbies or pastimes.
5
Getting Ready 2. Do you think reading is out of date as a hobby today? If not, why? Of course not. Reading is a good hobby. With the development of science and technology, new knowledge comes every day. If you stop learning even for a day, you will be lost. Reading is a good way to help you keep in touch with the outside world. Read widely, and you’ll be rich in knowledge. Reading is also a good way to relax yourself.
6
Getting Ready You can get a lot of fun in the books. A good book is a good friend to comfort you when you are unhappy. So long as you have a good book at hand, you’ll never feel lonely. Every valuable book will open a new world before you. Reading classic books can boost your learning experience. There are some reasons why classic books can do that: they have stood the test of time, they give you different “lenses” to look through, and they will most likely be relevant even to the far future. Reading the classics is an excellent intellectual exercise which will arm you with a lot of powerful intellectual tools.
7
Getting Ready 3. Have you got a hobby? If so, what is it? One of my hobbies is running. I like running very much because first of all it doesn’t cost you any money. You can do it anywhere, for example, on a city street and it’s a healthy hobby. If you run a lot, maybe three or four times a week, you will definitely stay in shape. My favorite time to go running is in the morning, because in the morning it’s nice and quiet, peaceful outside. You can see the sun coming up, feel the cool air on your face, and of course you can hear birds chirping, sometimes a rooster crowing. It’s just a really cool time to be outside.

The first postage stamp in history was issued in Great Britain in 1840. In the years since then, tens of thousands of different designs have been issued by the world’s nations, and tens of thousands of people have started to collect them. Even in the age of e-mail, stamp collecting remains a popular hobby. Don Peterson, 63, started collecting stamps when he was 10. In his 20s, he says, he was attracted to the stamps issued by the Philippines because of their beauty. He says he usually does research about the stamps, collects what’s available, then starts chasing the missing stamps to complete his collection. SB-Script2.1
33
“You have to look very hard for them all over the world because they’re not in one spot, “he says. “It is frustrating when you can’t find something, but when you do find something, it’s exciting joy. ” Persistence and patience, Peterson says, are what stamp collectors need, since finding those missing stamps can take decades. “What you do is you go out and find stamps that you like or stamps that are on envelopes that are used , ” he says. “Collect what you like and what you think is interesting and that you get some fun from. ” SB-Script2.2
34
Although people are now increasingly exchanging messages via e-mail, stamp collecting is not going to fade away. In fact, computer technology helps collectors search, collect and present their collections in new and innovative ways. SB-Script2.2

For Reference: SA For Reference At school, we had an interesting discussion about hobbies. It seemed that everyone had a cool hobby except me. James had the largest collection of stamps in my class. Gordon could balance things on his nose. And Susan was very keen on flower-arranging. After jotting down everyone’s hobby, I began to wonder what sort of hobby I could take up. I used to like watching birds. Is that an exciting hobby? Just as my mind was drifting towards bird-watching, I saw a beautiful picture on the wall, which reminded me of a really cool hobby, to photograph cute things. In spite of not being a skilled photographer, I could take interesting pictures of birds anyway. Perhaps there’s nothing like bird photography for a hobby!

Attracting and feeding wild birds are entertaining activities that have long been enjoyed by people all over the world. We feed birds for many reasons. Many pleasant hours can come from watching birds. A hobby often develops into a serious study of their habits. Accurate identification of birds is usually the first goal. There is responsibility associated with bird feeding, including a disease hazard. Attracting numbers of birds continually to the same spot can be harmful to them, particularly species that pick food from the ground contaminated by the droppings of other birds. In winter, when fewer natural foods are available and air temperatures are lower, extra feeding can keep a bird warm and well. Passage One Script1
112
Once begun, feeding should never stop during these lean months. You should be prepared to do what may be required to help those you want to befriend. A constant supply of food should be given until the cold is over and spring has come. If feeding is stopped during severe weather, birds used to relying upon the feeders might starve. Passage One Script2
113
A hobby is any interesting pursuit not our own business, which we take up for our amusement in our leisure time. What is business to one man may be a hobby of another, for example, a photographer may have gardening as his hobby and a paid gardener may go in for photography as his recreation. There are many kinds of hobbies. Collecting postage stamps is a common hobby in England, not only with boys but with men too. Some make collections of wild flowers while others take interest in collecting fossils. Such hobbies do not cost much and are within the reach of all. Passage Two Script1
114
But others such as collecting old books, antiquities are only for the rich. Other hobbies take the form of games and sports. Many take up open air games like golf, tennis or indoor games such as chess and cards. While hunting, fishing are the favorite recreations for others. Every young and old should have a hobby of some sort for his leisure time for it adds greatly to the pleasure of life. It is often an education in itself and it fills our vacant hours with interest. Passage Two Script2
115
I picked up the sewing habit when I was 26 and pregnant with my first child. Why did I begin my hobby when I was just about to have no leisure time in between raising young children and full-time work? The real joy of sewing is being able to sit down when you want to, at a leisurely pace. If you are forced to do it within a certain time, your enjoyment is nearly ruined. So, on lazy Sunday afternoons in Beijing, and only when I want to, I sew. The whirr( 嗡嗡声 ) of that machine is my best friend. It’s always there when I need it, and it stokes the fire of my artistic talent. And when I have to rip out a stitch( 针法 ) my clumsy fingers made it sew badly, it waits patiently. Passage Three Script1
116
I never understood hobbies like golf or ping-pong that leave you with nothing in your hand once you finish indulging. I suppose you develop a skill with those hobbies, but still, my sewing leaves me with something that can be clearly seen, physical, that covers me up in bed or hangs on the wall. My hobby keeps me warm, literally and emotionally. My advice: Find a hobby that warms your soul, and your mind will be forever grateful. Passage Three Script2
