© Copyright year ABB - 33 - ACS800-11 and common DC Common DC system DC link available in terminals for common DC configurations Simple way to implement low power common DC system

© Copyright year ABB - 34 - Comparison to thyristor bridge DC + DC - AC DC + DC - AC Motoring bridge Regenerating bridge If thyristor bridge is regenerating and line voltage drops, a thyristor cannot interrupt the current. The current can rush and blow the fuses. This is also risk for components. IGBT is able to switch off the current and protect the components. Control can function even during voltage dip.

© Copyright year ABB - 35 - Introduction to DTC control Torque step rise time Accurate speed or torque control Full torque at zero speed Power loss ride through No unnecessary process interruptions DTC principle utilised also on line converter control Excellent motor control in all situations DTC Flux vector Open loop PWM < 5 msec. 10 to 20 msec. > 100 msec. 0,00 0,50 1,00 Current Torque DTC PWM New Current level New Torque level Time

© Copyright year ABB - 36 - DTC and line side converter Ultra-fast transition between motoring and generating Line converter is capable of keeping the DC voltage steady Motoring and generating performance is equal Linear and smooth transitions are possible Immunity to supply voltage variations and disturbances Good power factor and harmonic performance -> economical transformer dimensioning

© Copyright year ABB - 37 - Voltage stabilisation Line converter control follows DC voltage reference In low network voltage conditions motor still gets full voltage This is advantage in motor dimensioning M U1=400VUdc=560VU2=400V ACS800-17 and line voltage 400V M U1=360VUdc=560VU2=400V ACS800-17 and line voltage 400V -10% M U1=440VUdc=620VU2=440V ACS800-17 and line voltage 400V +10%

© Copyright year ABB - 38 - Voltage boosting It is possible to set DC voltage reference to higher value … and use 500 Vac class equipment in 400 Vac network Optimisation possibility depending on the load curve Constant flux range can be extended M U1=400VUdc=710VU2=500V M U1=400VUdc=540VU2=400V ACS800-17 with default reference ACS800-17 with increased reference BACK TO CONTENT

© Copyright year ABB - 40 - Typical applications Centrifuge and decanter Crane Downhill conveyors Elevator Escalator Machine tool Metal sheet press Ski-lift Storage Test bench Winch Windmills

© Copyright year ABB - 41 - Example: metal sheet press DC technology was historic standard in presses There is trend to AC technology Less maintenance of the motor Network performance (power factor, harmonics) Better controllability Good dynamic performance of DTC is a benefit Load impact during stroke causes heavy speed drop

© Copyright year ABB - 42 - Example: sugar centrifuge Regenerative AC drive benefits: Power line by sugar production areas is often not very strong Improved quality due to good controllability Harvest season short and intensive Reliability Availability After sales support

© Copyright year ABB - 43 - Example: test bench Good control dynamics and response times required Continuous braking ACS800-17 benefits: Fast DTC control follows well even heavy testing DTC has good repeatability Robust IGBT supply unit Fast control interface developed

© Copyright year ABB - 44 - Example: escalators Braking capability needed especially in long belt installations Standardization of electrification

© Copyright year ABB - 45 - Example: crane Dynamic, reliable control Energy savings through regenerative braking Less maintenance with AC technology Robust against network disturbances

© Copyright year ABB - 46 - Example: ski lift Absolute safety and availability required Power line often weak at mountains Regenerative braking when load coming downward ACS800-17 benefits: High reliability Excellent network performance Smooth controllability High efficiency of AC motor BACK TO CONTENT
