Better learning with ICT Does ICT make for better learning? Yes! ICT can help pupils to learn and teachers to teach more effectively. However ICT will not make a difference simply by being used. Does ICT Improve Learning and Teaching in Schools? Steve Higgins, Newcastle University

Better learning with ICT ICT planning and provision Is there a one-size-fits-all solution? No! Many (but not all) outstanding schools tend to have a range of devices (ICT suite, computers/tablets) The new Computing Curriculum states that “KS2 pupils should be taught to select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices…” The average computer: pupil ratio in primary schools is 1:6 (recent OECD survey on ICT)

Better learning with ICT ICT planning and provision Subject plans include a section for use of ICT Subject leaders are responsible for the use of ICT in their subjects The ICT Co-ordinator works in conjunction with other subject leaders and teachers to enable the use of ICT across the curriculum Regular staff training on ICT, including e-Safety ICT used to support groups – SEN, Pupil Premium etc

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Interactive Whiteboards Make sure you are using SMART Notebook 11 The Activity Builder enables you to create matching, sorting and labelling activities, games and more using your own content Ensure the children use the Interactive Whiteboard Interactive Whiteboard in EYFS

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Visualisers Make sure visualisers are plugged in and set up properly Ensure that visualisers are being used Combine with an Interactive Whiteboard (capture snapshots and recordings) Ideas Big books in Literacy Using a ruler accurately and using a protractor in Mathematics Minibeasts in Science Colour-mixing in Art Sharing/reviewing/evaluating children’s work with the whole class Showing objects and artefacts in close detail

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Digital cameras/ Digital video cameras Every teacher to have a digital camera for assessment Class set of digital cameras/ digital video cameras Ideas Flip cams to video play scripts in Literacy Diary of an Evacuee in History http://vimeo.com/63724631 using a green screen (fabric, green backing paper) and software (Windows Movie Maker, Wax)http://vimeo.com/63724631Wax Animated stories (cartoons, stop frame animation, claymation) using various software (e.g. 2Animate, I Can Animate 2, Hue Animation Studio, Monkeyjam) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cRc-8NR0H02AnimateI Can Animate 2Hue Animation StudioMonkeyjam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cRc-8NR0H0

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Other ICT hardware and software Make sure that hardware and software for ICT isn’t just used in ICT! Ideas Data loggers to support Science, Geography Spreadsheets to support Mathematics Logo to support Mathematics Control Boxes to support Design Technology

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Programming Programming in the new Computing Curriculum can be used to support other subjects too. Ideas Beebot to teach measurement and direction in Mathematics Scratch to tell stories in Literacy Scratch and Kodu for games creationScratchKodu http://makeymakey.com/

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Virtual Learning Environment If you have a VLE, make sure it is used by the whole school, not just ‘keen teachers’ For a VLE to be successfully used, it must have the support of the SLT and not just left to the ICT Co-ordinator to develop Ideas Online book reviews (using database) in Literacy A glossary of 2D/3D shapes in Maths A wiki on the Tudors in History Using forums to support speaking and listening Sections for additional work at home and “snow day”

Better learning with ICT Ideas for better learning with ICT Podcasting A set of microphones (standard, Easi-Speak, Easi-Speak Pro) and some free software (Audacity) is all that is neededEasi-SpeakEasi-Speak ProAudacity Ideally it should be published on the school’s website or VLE Ideas Serialised story in Literacy The life cycle of a frog in Science Interviews with WWII veterans in History Recordings of performances in Music Oak Mag Radio Network
