Agenda Codes, Standards and Testing Penetration Listings Questions

Codes, Standards and Testing

Uponor PEX tubing and Fittings meet  ASTM F876/F877 (Tubing)  ASTM F1960 and F877 (ProPEX Fittings)  NSF 61 for Health Effects  CSA B137.5 UL 1821 For Combination Water Distribution Systems and Fire Sprinkler Systems.  Acceptable for residential Fire Sprinkler applications (NFPA 13D) AWWA C904 for Water Service Applications Codes and Standards

Building Code Requirements  Type I Construction – Concrete Floor/Ceiling Assemblies – Steel Stud Wall Assemblies  Section 603 Combustible Material in Type I And II Construction  Section 603.1.2 Piping – “The use of combustible piping materials shall be permitted when installed in accordance with the limitations of the Mechanical Code and the Plumbing Code. Fire Resistive Construction

Table 601  Shows the Fire-Resistance Rating Requirements for Building Elements. – Floor/Ceiling Assemblies required to have a 2 hour rating Section 703 Fire-Resistance Ratings and Fire Tests Section 703.2 Fire-Resistance Ratings  “The fire-resistance rating of building elements shall be determined in accordance with the test procedures set forth in ASTM E119 or in accordance with Section 703.3.” Section 708 Fire Partitions Section 708.3 Fire Resistance Rating  “Fire Partitions shall have a fire-resistance rating of not less than 1 hour.” Fire Resistive Construction

Section 712 Penetrations Section 712.3.1.2 Through Penetration firestop system  “ Through penetrations shall be protected by an approved penetration firestop system installed as tested in accordance with ASTM E814 or UL 1479, with a minimum positive pressure differential of 0.01 inch (2.49 Pa) of water and shall have an F rating of not less than the required fire-resistance rating of the wall penetrated.” Fire Resistive Construction

ASTM E84 25/50 flame spread, smoke developed ratings (plenum applications) ASTM E119 assemblies  UNA UL listings (ANSI/ UL263) – UL-K913 (2-HR Concrete F/C) – UL-L557 (1-HR Wood F/C) – UL-U372 (1-HR Wood Wall) – UL-V444 (1-HR Steel Wall) – UL-G573 (2-HR Hambro F/C) ASTM E814 – horizontal and vertical penetrations  Numerous Fire-stop manufacturers have tested most types of penetrations with their Fire-stop systems. Codes and Standards

ASTM E84 This Standard addresses the Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials and is referenced in the Mechanical Codes  E84 is applicable to combustible materials contained within a duct or plenum. The Mechanical Codes require that materials contained within a duct or Plenum have a Flame Spread Index of not more than 25 and a Smoke Developed Index of not more than 50 – Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) Section 602.2 – International Mechanical Code (IMC) Section 602.2.1

ASTM E84 What is classified as a Plenum?  A plenum “is an air compartment or chamber including uninhabited crawl spaces, areas above a ceiling or below a floor, including air spaces below raised floors of computer/data processing centers, or attic spaces, to which one or more ducts are connected and which forms part of either the supply air, return air or exhaust air system, other than the occupied space being conditioned.” Definition from UMC

ASTM E84 Current listing from Intertek (Warnock Hersey) addresses 3/4-inch (1” Canada) and smaller Uponor PEX tubing “Tubing runs shall be located at least 18" apart”

ASTM E84 Listings as published on Intertek website

ASTM E84 New listing from Intertek (Warnock Hersey) addresses 2-inch and smaller Uponor PEX tubing “Insulated tubing runs shall be located at 0” minimum spacing for a maximum of 3 adjacent pipes with an additional 18” spacing to the next pipe run. There shall be no exposed tubing.”

ASTM E84 Fiberglass insulation shall be listed for flame spread rating and conform to: -Wall Thickness: ½” to 1”-Density: 4.0 to 4.5 pcf -Flame spread: 20 FS, 30 SD Max

ASTM E814 This Standard is the test method for fire tests of through-penetration firestop systems and is referenced in Section 711 of The IBC  Rating for the penetration is dictated by rating for the assembly being penetrated  Any penetration of a Fire-rated Assembly shall have the annular space between the pipe and assembly filled with an approved firestop material – Listings for specific firestop material shall be followed for appropriate assembly

ASTM E814 No such thing as “What caulk do I use?” The question is “What assembly are you using?” Once assembly is identified, determine the appropriate firestop material Some Firestops that have been reviewed for chemical compatibility include Rectorseal Metacaulk, 3M Fire Barrier IC 15WB+ and Nuco Selfseal GG266 Canada recommends use of Nuco Selfseal GG266 The UL website has all these assembly listings

ASTM E814 System No. W-L-2104 May 08, 1998 F Rating — 2 Hr T Rating — 1-1/2 Hr

Penetration Listings UL System No. W-L-2524  2 Hr penetration  EcoFlex 2” or smaller carrier pipe  Rectorseal Metacaulk wrap strip  Steel Collars on both sides of penetration

Penetration Listings UL System No. W-L-2526  2 Hr penetration  Pre-insulated PEX tubing ¾” or smaller  Rectorseal Metacaulk Wrap Strip
