8 Is Technology Really Effecting Our Health? Emotional Health the degree to which you feel emotionally secure and relaxed in everyday life. (Doris, 2008) Mental Health Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. (USHHS, 2016) Physical Health is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. The ability to recognize that our behaviors have a significant impact on our wellness and adopting healthful habits while avoiding destructive habits. (University of California- Riverside, 2014)

11 Emotional/Mental Health: Social Media & Mental/Emotional Health ~ 42% of online adults use multiple social networking sites On average, Americans spend 7.6 hours a month using social media Facebook: 63% of American users log on daily 40% of Americans log on multiple times per day Berge Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS) Researchers found that people who are more anxious and socially insecure are more likely to use social networking sites. 18 How Technology Affects Sleep Cont’d According to a National Sleep Foundation Study… A study from the Lighting Research Centre suggests that the light emitted from displays of tablets and similar devices can cause melatonin suppression which affects our natural body clock. By using a self-luminous display for 2 hours before bed, you can suppress melatonin by 22% making it harder to get to sleep. Source: Stampler (2014)

21 Technology & Physical Health: Eating Habits Most buying decisions about what to have for dinner happen 2 hours before mealtime. Most Millennials learn to cook from YouTube – not from their mother. At least 2 out of 3 daily meals are now eaten alone; while online. Most households who do eat together often eat different meals according to taste preferences. Source: Barber (2013)
