Good Morning! Do Now: Grab a “6. Protein” note packet and answer the following question on the back: Question: How do people build up their muscles?

6: Proteins Mr. Wiley Living Environment

Q: What is a protein?

I. What are proteins? -Proteins are large organic molecules -Composed of amino acids -Perform several functions in the body including: Ex: neurotransmitters, hormones, enzymes, pigments, antibodies, build muscles, receptors, make up cell membrane - A Proteins shape determines its function

II. How do amino acids work to build proteins? Amino acids look like butterflies The information for amino acids comes from your genetics (DNA) There are 20 different types of amino acids

Protein Shape Proteins have something called quaternary sequence, which is kind of like a 4D movie. Quaternary- Fourth in order Sequence- order of events

Q: How do amino acids build a protein? STEP 1: Primary Sequence Chain of Amino Acids THE MOST IMPORTANT Determined by your genes (DNA)

STEP 2: Secondary Sequence Folding/Coiling of Amino Acids Determined by the sequence of amino acids in primary sequence Caused by hydrogen bonds Alpha Helix (Twisty!) Beta Sheet (Crinkle Cut) Q: How do amino acids build a protein?

STEP 3: Tertiary Sequence Folding of Secondary Sequence Determined by the sequence of amino acids in primary and folding in secondary Fold to hide hydrophobic regions Q: How do amino acids build a protein?

STEP 4: Quaternary Sequence When multiple tertiary sequence proteins combine. Not all proteins do this Q: How do amino acids build a protein?

1. The shape of a protein molecule is influenced by: a)Whether it is organic or inorganic b)The sequence of amino acids in it c)The number of genes found in the nucleus d)The number of chromosomes in a cell III. Practice Questions

2. Which statement concerning proteins is NOT correct? a. Proteins are long, usually folded chains. b. The shape of a protein determines its function. c. Proteins can be broken down and used for energy. d. Proteins are bonded together, resulting in simple sugars. III. Practice Questions

3. The sequence of subunits in a protein is most likely dependent on: a)Region in the cell where the enzymes are produced b)DNA in the cell c)Types of cells in which starch is found d)Kinds of materials in the cell membrane Protein Structure and Function III. Practice Questions

4. The diagram provides some information concerning proteins. Which phrase best represents A? a.Sequence of amino acids b.Sequence of simple sugars c.Sequence of starch molecules d.Sequence of ATP molecules III. Practice Questions

So, what? What’s the big deal if my protein’s wrong? Wacky Proteins WRITE DOWN TWO THINGS YOU LEARNED AND ONE QUESTION. 1. 2. Question:
