England BIS/NAS/SFA have agreed that the revised new hair and barbering qualifications will replace the current qualifications within the current SASE frameworks from the May TBC All other requirements will remain the same, such as PLTS & ERR Wales Awaiting confirmation from Habia/Skills Active Northern Ireland

Key changes Hair classification (this is a guideline only)
Type 1 – Straight Hair 1.1 Fine/Thin – Hair tends to be very soft, shiny, difficult to hold a curl, hair also tends to be oily. 1.2 Medium – Hair has lots of volume and body 1.3 Course – Hair is normally extremely straight and difficult to curl. Type 2 – Wavy Hair 2.1 Fine/Thin – Hair has a definite “S” pattern. Normally can accomplish various styles 2.2 Medium – Hair tends to be frizzy and a little resistant to styling 2.3 Coarse – Hair is also resistant to styling and normally very frizzy; tends to have thicker waves. Type 3 – Curly Hair 3.1 Loose curls – Hair tends to have a combination texture. It can be thick and full with lots of body, with a definite “S” pattern. It also tends to be frizzy 3.2 Tight curls – Also tends to have a combination texture, with a medium amount of curl. Type 4 – Very Curly Hair 4.1 Soft – Hair tends to be very fragile, tightly coiled and has a more define curly pattern 4.2 Wiry – Also very fragile and tightly coiled; however with a less defined curly pattern – has more of a “Z” pattern shape. © CITY & GUILDS

Assessment – Practical observations
Assessment strategy MUST be followed Practical observations – range, evidence and number of observations stipulated Require candidates to demonstrate their practical skills Hairdressing & Barbering Enhanced coloured log books for L1 L2 and L3 Carried out in a Realistic Working Environment (RWE) The service times are flexible, Assessors should use their professional discretion, particularly for situations where client factors would require additional time in normal commercial setting. 3 Step Assessment guidance
Simulation is not acceptable for any units within this qualification Witness testimony should only be used as an additional method of Assessment when minimum amount of stated observations have been carried by an Assessor The Assessor must hold, or be working towards, a valid assessor’s qualification based on LSIS, formally LLUK, Learning and Development National Occupational Standards (2010) A minimum of 30 hours CPD is required per annum – no pro rata The Internal Verifier must hold, or be working towards, a valid verifier’s qualification based on LSIS, formally LLUK, Learning and Development National Occupational Standards (2010) Step 3 © CITY & GUILDS

Documentation You will need the following: Point 1: Qualification Handbook – this is your teaching syllabus, which contains the National Occupational Standards and Evidence Requirements Point 2: Assessment Guidance documentation – this is your information on how and what the learners will be assessed on and how Point 3: Question papers – includes paper based multiple choice questions for level 1, short answer questions, assignments and marking guides for each level 2 & 3 unit Point 4: Log Books – this will be the learners record of practical observations completed Point 5: on line test available for each unit information will be found in the qualification handbook. A new feature highlighting specific values and behaviours relevant to the learning in each unit. All of the values and behaviours are explained in greater depth in an introductory chapter. Maths & English Activities that provide an opportunity for learners to apply and practise their maths and English skills are highlighted with an icon, to show how these skills are embedded within Hairdressing and Barbering skills. Health & Safety Health and Safety considerations are highlighted by an icon throughout each unit to show how they are relevant to all aspects of Hairdressing and Barbering. These are explained in more detail in an introductory chapter. Eco Environmental considerations are highlighted throughout the units by an icon.

NOS UPDATES We are updating our City & Guilds MHD Academy solution to reflect the changes to the National Occupational Standards (NOS) Our updated City & Guilds MHD Academy offer will cover 31 Hairdressing AND Barbering units at levels 2 and 3 New content will be added to the City & Guilds MHD Academy tutor site by the end of July 2015 We will have a total of 15 different student licence packs, which will be available for centres to bulk buy or learners to buy on an individual (direct) basis for new academic year A full sample unit of updated resources is available for evaluation now – see how our new resources will look….
