2 Statistics on Study Abroad  594 Loyola students (64% of our junior class) studied abroad last year (semester, year-long and summer)  Between 62 - 65% of our students will have an international experience  Study Abroad Programs are popular at Loyola

4 Study Abroad at Loyola  Offer several options and various categories of study abroad opportunities  Each program offers different benefits, costs, levels of financial aid and housing options

5 Selection Criteria for Admission  Cumulative GPA – to be considered for study abroad, students must have at least a 2.75; some of our programs require a higher GPA (3.0) for consideration and admission. 2.5 for summer programs and study tours  Social behavior/disciplinary record  Courses should fit into the Loyola degree program  Programs have cap limits  1 deadline for the entire year: First Wednesday after Thanksgiving (Sophomore year)

6 How Does it Work Within Your Four Years at Loyola?  Freshman: Explore our study abroad options  Sophomore: Plan your course registration; select your first choice program and two back- ups; APPLY by the deadline  Junior: Go! Explore, Study, and Serve  Senior: Share your experiences and help prepare future students

8 1) Loyola Programs  Pay Loyola tuition, in most programs pay Loyola housing charge  Pay Loyola deposit  Pay Loyola program fees (subject to change)  Loyola financial aid can be used  Transfer all courses, grades and credits  Directors on-site or hired personnel (most sites)  Programs vary in benefits (updated each September for the following academic year) Categories of Options:

15 Non-Loyola Summer Programs Only courses and credits transfer, but not the grades *Must enroll through an American provider or U.S. institution AND receive and American transcript * Must be 4 Weeks minimum in duration (3 weeks minimum for language immersion programs) * Courses must be approved before departure

16 What Costs Are Associated with Study Abroad?  Tuition  *Housing  *Program fees  *Travel documents – passports/visas/immigrations charges  *Meals  *Airline tickets  All personal expenses (food, books, independent travel, shopping, local transportation, entertainment, etc.) *Varies from program to program

17 Other Possible Expenses Associated With Study Abroad  Immunizations/health check-ups (for some programs)  Back-ground checks (for some programs)  Bedding packages (for some programs)  Transportation to port of departure  Application fees (for some programs)  Prepaid envelopes, mailings (for some programs)  Loyola official transcript fee (for some programs)

18 Expenses Abroad  1) Students spent on average $4500 per semester on food, travel, entertainment, shopping. However, some spend only $2500, some spend $8000 and more…  2) Compare what benefits are included in each program.  3) Some destinations are less expensive than others.  4) Know your host country: You do not have to visit 11 countries in one semester!  5) Keep dining out, travel, and shopping under control!

19 What Should I Stress to My Child?  Must apply and meet deadlines (First Wednesday after Thanksgiving of Sophomore year!)  Competitive admission process  Academic endeavor  Learning and living in a different environment  Grades and behavior at Loyola will affect your study abroad plans  Grades and behavior abroad will affect your degree and student status at Loyola  Programs vary on benefits, costs and services provided  Take time to investigate the differences  Freshman year is not too early to start planning  Must have an academic plan!
